Clairol Root Touch-Up Natural Instincts Permanent Hair Dye, 4 Dark Brown

I love Clairol natural instincts. I have been covering my grey roots for 15 years using this product. I use the root touch up in between salon colors to save on money. I find that Natural Instincts maintains my cover longer leaves my hair looking like it was just professionally done. There is little to no chemical smell. The product is creamy, very easy to apply with brush provided, and nourishing.

The dye blends really well with my natural dark brown hair and gives a nice, even finish. It’s easy to apply, doesn’t feel harsh on the hair, and leaves it looking soft and healthy. Perfect for maintaining color between salon visits.

Color is good, but lasts about 2 weeks - on me anyways. Also, they keep fluctuating the price and it’s more expensive than the full box of dye.

Perfect for my roots. The color is spot on for me if you have almost black, dark brown hair. Not messy, which I appreciate. It lasts for weeks or until my hair grows back out.

I ordered this item to do exactly as described - touch up gray roots. What I learned: There are NO gloves included in the box; I was astounded. I looked back at the description, and one of the pictures of the item specifically states, "Not pictured: plastic gloves & leaflet (I take that to be the set of instructions)." Why would you say there are no gloves pictures unless there are supposed to be gloves included? The ad also states that "everything you need is included." Gloves are a must! I needed to get this task done and was on a timeline, so I didn't have time to go out in search of plastic gloves. My fingers and nails were left stained. However, when I further researched I saw that indeed there are no gloves in the set. You must have plastic gloves, so unless you have a stash on hand, I suggest moving on to a different product. After reading many reviews of similar dyes, one frequent comment was that the reviewer regretted not ordering a darker shade because their grays resisted the color a bit, and the results were lighter than desired. So I ordered darker than what I needed. A pro and, in my case, a con - the color took perfectly! So it performed as described. It worked quickly, and a week later there has been no fading. I should have gone with the lighter shade of brown instead of the "dark brown." The formula was definitely not as smelly as the old-school dyes. I don't recall it saying "ammonia-free" and didn't see that in the ad, but the harsh chemical smell is minimal. It does have a nice little plastic tray for mixing the formula but it is so lightweight as to be flimsy. If you set the little brushing tool in the bowl and let it go the plastic tray tips - suggestions put the plastic bowl in a heavier duty, perhaps ceramic bowl to stabilize it. It does the job, but it is definitely cutting corners by not providing the customer with the necessary plastic gloves. For this reason, I would NOT purchase this again, nor do I recommend it.

I used this to cover roots. It did a great job doing so and I would buy it again. It did not smell bad at all. It did stain my face around the hairline so I have to use make up remover to try to take some out, and make up to cover the rest. I used some Vaseline around my face before applying color but I should have used more. The stain on my face was gone in a couple of days so I would color my hair when I don’t have to go out for a couple of days just in case.

Excellent roof touch up to do a blend in with your grays.

I purchased this because my usual brand was currently unavailable so I use this as the replacement. While it did a great job of covering grays this dried my hair out so much and I am now stuck with dry hair until the dried parts grow out. I will not buy this again.
