Q: What are the chemicals inside that mix together to create the glow?

"The glow stick contains two chemicals, a base catalyst, and a suitable dye (sensitizer, or fluorophor). This creates an exothermic reaction. The chemicals inside the plastic tube are a mixture of the dye, the base catalyst, and diphenyl oxalate. The chemical in the glass vial is hydrogen peroxide. " from Wikipedia.

Q: can these be put in a small amount of water without destroying the integrety of the product??

I use these to attach to the surface float for Lobster Traps, which are thrown into salt-water to make the float easier to see and find at night. The glow sticks are designed to keep the chemicals inside, and work just as well to keep water from getting into them. We have also used these sticks tied to the regulator of SCUBA tanks to make it easier to keep track of your diving partner. The sticks float and on a short bit of string they float above the diver's tank making it easier to see them from above or behind. Yes, they are waterproof! I've never seen it claimed by any of the sellers, but anecdotally they also appear to be pressure resistant, at least to 4 atmospheres or so based on our experience.

I live in NJ and keep them in a non temperature controlled garage all year long.
