It's a shame that Mice and Mystics is no longer in print, along with the expansions. This expansion is a little darker, but is equally as fun. 100% recommend. This is a wonderful expansion to Mice & Mystics. It continues the story of the base game with a new tale about what has happened within the castle since the defeat of Venetstra. As expansions go, it's a bit lighter on new materials, as it contains only 6 chapters, has no new maps, and only a few new miniatures. But it introduces variations to the creatures from the base game to keep things fresh (magically altered versions of the rats, roaches, centipedes, and spiders). It also includes Nere, a wild mouse mystic who is a new playable character. We love the original game and were very happy to be able to continue playing the characters with this expansion. I've noticed that a lot of sellers are trying to sell the game at a huge mark up, claiming that it is out of print. I suggest you visit plaidhatgames.com - the maker of the game - and check to see if they have it for sale in their store before shelling out too much money for it. If you'd prefer your expansions to have more bells and whistles, then check out Downwood Tales. It costs the same as the base game, but it also offers a campaign the same length as the original and about as many new maps and miniatures.

Awesome expansion to an already incredible game! It is incredibly fun to paint the finely detailed figures - another way to enjoy this incredible series. The original game is great for older children and this expansion adds a dark element which my now preteen son enjoys. Such a great series for years of enjoyment yet to come.

If you felt like the base was too easy and not enough RPG then you will be interested in this expansion. I have just got started with it and the difficulty is higher. Requires more strategy adn teamwork to beat some of the nasty new minions. Mouse heroes have a new character and abilities for each of them to help close the gap. Kids may find this less friendly and more scary. Many new monsters are undead and very creepy compared to the base.

Deep story and fun game play makes this a must have addition to your Mice and Mystics set.

Keeping everything in perspective, this expansion is average at best. Do not buy this expansion based on hero and villain bits. The quality of production is noticeably less than that which came with the original game. The figures are smaller, and generally cheaper quality. They don't even look to be on the same scale as those in the base game. You get very little in regards to extra with this expansion. What you do get is a continuation of the story, which is superb. I repeat, do NOT expect nice figures to come with this expansion. They do not mesh well with the base game in regards to appearance. Really, they're quite ugly and cheap. I would rate this expansion with less that 3 stars if based on bang for the buck value. I give it 3 because of the story and the story alone. In my opinion, PlaidHat put far more emphasis on the box than anything else. The box is functionally useless since you'll end up storing all the components with the base game. However the box is so pretty and sturdy. You almost want to chuck the garbage figures that came with the expansion and re-purpose the box for something else. Due to my lack luster impression of quality in this expansion, I will definitely not purchase any more in the series. You can't sell a product based on a pretty box with inflated reviews....or maybe you can...

The new character (Nere) and ability cards are quite fun; definitely worth picking up if you are a Mice & Mystics fan.
