mystique at her most cool and fun.
i had a bunch of these issues and absolutely needed to purchase this trade paperback to find out what happened next and to have as much work by this writer/artist team as possible. the writing by sean mckeever is very clever and exiting and often very funny. the artwork by manuel garcia expresses exiting action from constantly varying angles which are all expertly and gratifyingly illustrated in spite of being very tricky perspectives. the artist goes above and beyond. i have thousands of comics and this is hands down one of my favorites. mystique leaps and fights with totally convincingly designed and illustrated acrobatic expertise. she's wearing this very cool, sexy leather outfit throughout which perfectly reflects her super-cool, badass personality, except when she is cleverly using her mutation as part of some itelligently thought-out plan to pull some kind of con job on her adversaries.i get very bored by comic artwork that only gives outlines, which this book never does- there are always fascinating shadows cast across the characters and backrounds in captivating ways. in spite of knowing that mystique is a chameleon shapeshifter, the writer finds brilliant ways to fake out the reader again and again so that you are surprised when mystique exposes herself or is exposed. this kind of "aha" or "gotcha" moment is one of my very favorite reasons to read fiction- when an author has obviously thought out the pieces of the riddle/puzzle filled plot way ahead of time rather than just making it up as they go along. and this book fulfills that craving again and again. i have found myself profoundly disappointed by nearly every superhero movie that has come out, and it is because i actually read good comics like this one, and screenwriters simply do not measure up to this kind of clever writing, which brings out the coolest potential in the coolest characters.
