North Cyprus (Bradt Travel Guides)

I can't fault this guide. Found it so useful in all areas during our recent trip. The history was to the point, interesting, informative but not overwhelming. The general information and tips for money changing etc were useful and advice for road trips was brilliant. We would never have thought to go round the track outside old Famagusta - but had it all to ourselves and enjoyed stunning views of the walls of this fortress of a city. We then followed the advised route around the derelict no-mans land between north and south Cyprus which was an eye opener. Advice on finding the deserted beaches going into the Karpas was again successfully followed and we even came across the wild donkeys standing in the road as we were told we would. In fact by then we thought we were being set up! The guide was very up to date and helpful on new road building when some of the actual road signs were not that clever. Very good advice on eating venues in Kyrenia and Bellapais - where we were staying (though here a recent fire had knocked a couple of the venues out). I always buy a guide to where I visit but often wonder why I had bothered - not this one - excellent.

Not the best of guide books. Firstly, it delivers a great deal of 'background' (history, politics, etc.), whilst that's not bad in itself, it does mean that this relatively small book is not expansive with 'tourist' information, Secondly, there is quite a bit of repetition which, in turn, thirdly, means that details about a place can be scattered throughout its pages. Fourthly, whilst the maps are good, they cannot be expanded/zoomed into for greater detail (probably a problem with the kindle conversion rather than a fault with the book). Overall: useful but I would have hoped for better.

This book proved very useful on our trip to Northern Cyprus. It is a good size to carry around and contained a lot of relevant information along with some historical info. Wish there had been a few more colour pictures but that's just me. Definitely one to take if you plan to get the most out of your visit to Northern Cyprus.

There is now an issue 8 version though this was reprinted in 2012. Information is still accurate as are the prices to historical sites. Exchange rate is now 4.5TL to £1 (shown as 2 in the guide).It arrived promptly, used thoroughly on holiday. A useful guide.
