It's Difficult To Find Something Natural To Chew That Your Dogs Will Like
My wife and I rescue and rehabilitate Irish Wolfhounds. They are given up by their owners for various reasons, some because they didn't really know what they were getting into and some because of a change in the owner's circumstances. There are many things that can go wrong with young Irish Wolfhounds. New breeders tend to jump in when it looks like a profit can be made and potential owners may not do enough research into the breed before taking the plunge.Finding something appropriate for the young hounds to chew without having to contend with them ingesting pieces of rawhide, rubber, Nylabone, and/or pieces of your furniture, rugs, or pillows can be challenging. We have essentially narrowed it down to three items. The first is uncooked femur bones that you can purchase at your local butcher shop or grocery store. You just have to make sure that they aren't small enough to be swallowed and lodge in your dog's throat. Of course you also have to watch to see that your chewer doesn't whittle the size down enough to be a choking hazard. The second is leftover t-bones that you cut off your steaks prior to cooking. No cooked bones for any dogs! They can splinter and cause serious internal injuries. And the third product is split antlers like this particular Wild Split Elk Antler Dog Bone. We tried the whole antlers initially but found that our dogs lost interest in them when they couldn't make any progress while trying to chew them up. The split antlers offer some dried marrow to the dogs and also allow them to slowly make progress when chewing on the ends. The dogs don't lose interest in them but even if they did, a small smear of good peanut butter on the marrow is guaranteed to bring them back to it. These bones last a long time and provide hours of chewing pleasure. Just make sure to keep checking on the condition of the antler to verify that it isn't splintering or being chewed into sharp edges.

Very pleased!
My rescue dog is a big boy and always enthusiastic to chew his edible treats. Unfortunately even the biggest bully sticks or edible chews labeled "ultra long lasting" last about 20 minutes max. I've read that bones and rawhide can be dangerous so I avoid those. After searching for safe and truly long lasting, durable alternatives I decided to give antlers a try. He had zero interest in the deer antler I first tried which was disappointing but ended up loving this elk antler. He doesn't want to chew it everyday but he has maintained an occasional interest in it over the past couple of months and can chew on it for a long time without consuming it all or getting bored. The antler has held up well...a significant amount of marrow is gone and the outside is wearing down but it's still working for now. I do keep an eye on him while he's enjoying the antler and once I had to take it away because I saw a spot of blood in the marrow. It wasn't anything serous, just a little cut that healed quickly. I'd recommend giving this a try.

Healthier alternative to"bad for dogs" rawhide bones
I was turned on to the KONG split antlers by a friend after finding out from my vet that rawhide chews do not digest well and can lead to major health problems for dogs. I've tried the nylon flavored bones, rope chews, etc. My dog ,, a 65 pound male Australian Shepard, was not having any part of them. I am so glad my friend shared information about the KONG Split Antler Bones. What a great alternative for dogs over rawhide chews. The antler chews do not smell or get gummy or gooey. The area under where my dog chews on the antler is not sticky - unlike many other bones or dog chews. The KONG brand does not break or splinter unlike other antler products from other companies. The KING Antler Bones last a long time. My dog uses his teeth to scrape the inner part of the antler, which results in cleaner teeth. The KONG Wild Split Elk Dog Bones are not easy to find in big chain pet supply stores. I had to order mine on line.

Great but adhesive was a problem
This was perfect for my Boston Terrier who is an avid bone chewer. It was small enough for her to "hold" it and chew. She loves it! I bought a couple of these together- I have never tried them for my dog before. I was worried she may not be interested. She was! I did minus one star due to the sticky adhesive used on the bone to "stick" it to the cardboard. It was in the grooves of the bone and very hard to remove. (see photo) I didn't want to give it to my dog with any residue on it since I am not sure what may be in the adhesive.

She loves them
These are great for crazy chewers. Our schnauzer is and she chews these down to almost nothing before they start to splinter and I have to take them away from her. She loves them and goes wild when she sees a new one. Price was kind of high, I found the same item at Chewy.com at a cheaper price.

We order two of everything for our two pups and of course they both end up liking the same bone. Nothing different with these. I ordered the largest size, as our 6 month old Australian cattle pups tend to make it their mission to eat the bone in one night. We had the Kong Wild with rope attached/through drilled holes and those are made with the wider part of antlers. They are still in one piece, got some of the marrow out. These with out the rope are skinnier. They came and are two different colors. The lighter color one’s marrow was easy to get out (girl pup had it out in one night) and left white flakes all over the carpet. The 2nd darker one still has marrow in it. They lost interest in them. Play with them every now and then.
