This Spears schedule 80 PVC union fitting has socket openings on both ends, and is suitable for connecting two pipes. The socket ends connect to pipes with a smooth bore for enhanced flow. The fitting has three pieces and includes a threaded connection that can be screwed or unscrewed to connect or disconnect pipes more easily than with couplings. It is made of gray PVC (polyvinyl chloride) for chemical and corrosion resistance, high strength, and less weight than fittings made from metal, and has an EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) seal for resistance to oil, water, and some solvents. It is compatible with schedule 80 (thick wall) PVC pipes and fittings, and is suitable for chemical processing, industrial plating, chilled water distribution, deionized water lines, and chemical drainage and wastewater treatment systems. PVC can be connected to other materials such as steel, copper, or cast iron using transition fittings. The fitting has a maximum operating temperature of 140 degrees F, and a maximum operating pressure of 235 pounds per square inch (psi) at 73 degrees F. It meets ASTM International D1784 and D2467 standards for quality assurance, and is certified by National Sanitation Foundation International (NSF) for potable water service. This schedule 80 PVC union fitting is suitable for connecting pipes for conveying drinking water, waste water, chemicals, and other liquids in a range of industries.Pipe fittings are components used for connecting, terminating, controlling flow, and changing the direction of piping in many different industries. When purchasing pipe fittings, consider the application, as this will affect material type, shape, size and required durability. Fittings are available threaded or unthreaded, in many shapes, styles, sizes, and schedules (pipe wall thickness).Spears Manufacturing produces thermoplastic fittings and valves for fluid, drain, waste, and vent systems. The company, founded in 1969 and headquartered in Sylmar, CA, meets International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard 9001.

Important to know
I bought this union hoping to match it to an existing older union. The original installed union has the flat/mating surface on the female side, the o-rings (two of them in the older union) on the male side. This union is opposite. The o-ring piece is fitted with the female side, the flat mating surface is on the male side. The three stars is not for that fitment issue, but that there is some deformed roughness on the o-ring piece with marks that look like it was cut off a molding stem. It needs some file dressing to remove the burr left behind. Such 'fixing' should not be required on a new fitting.Incidentally, this union has ONE o-ring, not two. I have not seen a double-ringed union prior to taking my plumbing apart. IF you are hoping to match your two-ring union and do not have the room to completely replace the union, THIS piece may well NOT work for you.

Avoid air leakage in your system.
I like the sturdiness of the schedule 80 fitting. It will resist any cracking and flow of water through the fitting. I am using this union in the suction line of a pond intake and will purchase another for use in the discharge side of the pump. I feel the heavy duty of the unions will help avoid any leakage.

Spears, good value.
I used each side of this union to cap off and winterize my sprinkler system, I had to use this genuine Spears for the unique thread. Shipped out in a reasonable time and was better than driving to the nearest distributor.

Good quality and price.
Nice quality at a fair price. I could not find these spears 897 series union anywhere but on line. They have a unique thread size and aren't compatible with most other unions.
