It comes with a protective plastic sheet that needs to be removed before inserting into the cake.

Dissapointed
I was very dissapointed in this product. Did not have time to return. The letters were all bubbly and looked so bad. We ended up putting in on the bridal shower cake anyway and hoped no one would notice but it was hard to miss the bubbles on each letter.
