Q: About how quickly would this freeze a large block of ice?

Trick question. On a tangent as this is also important. Yes 32* is freezing but the quality and accuracy I have seen changes based on the make and models of mini freezers. Depending upon the real, actual temperature (not the marketing advertised) - as how well the doors stay shut and don’t leak cold air - and the “true” temperature of the machine as advertised degrees are not always correct… if anyone has this unit… have you all noticed any frozen items melt at all even a little bit? I have had mini freezers where they list the same specs but ice actually will melt; the last one had a compressor that worked so hard that it got very hot, which many of them do and so the marketed internal temp was not truly correct. Anyone with this model seen that -10* is not the case when using a thermometer or seeing ice melt at all?

Q: Can I put this freezer on its side to store larger items like a sheet of cake?

If you lay the freezer on it's side, the compressor WILL NOT receive any oil and will burn up.

Q: Sorry to be disgusting, but could I use this in my room to keep feeding mice/rats frozen??

I use this for storing frozen mice for my snakes. More hygienic (thus, less disgusting) than storing frozen feeder rodents (or raw poultry and other meat) with any of your family's foodstuffs that won't be cooked before they are eaten! The lack of an auto defrost feature is actually an advantage, since temperatures fluctuate little except when you are defrosting manually.

Q: Is this a manual defrost unit?

Gosh, mine didn't build up very fast- I've had it for several months and just defrosted it recently. I was surprised at how fast and easy it was to defrost- I unplugged it, and after an hour or two (didn't time it), there wasn't much water pooled on the bottom but the sheets of ice just lifted off, I wiped it out, and I was done, very little work involved.
