Mobile Digital Art: Using the iPad and iPhone as Creative Tools

unlimited possibilities
I must, first of all, commend the author on what must have been a daunting project, particularly with new apps coming and going on a daily basis. I found the book helpful and fascinating in many ways. I would have given it five stars but for the fact that it was weighted so heavily on art as opposed to photography. I did some painting as a younger man but now in my advanced years, I find it extremely difficult on an iPhone. Photography is easier for me to handle, especially with apps that cross over to the iPad. The book's conceptual approach, along with the variety of projects and individuals who are working with this new medium gives one an excellent overview of the possibilities.

Not very useful
I have several issues with this book. The first is that it already seems out of date. Not surprising, considering how fast things change. Before buying this book, I tried a number of drawing apps - starting with Paper (too limited), Brushes (it always seemed awkward to me) and ArtRage (never could master the color picker, really lags behind my strokes). Then I found Procreate and am totally sold on drawing and painting on the ipad. I was disappointed to find that the main drawing app mentioned in this book was Brushes. There are lots of other apps that the artists use for special effects - some are not available, some don't work well on the ipad. I did end up finding a few new apps that are useful, but it wasn't worth the price of the book. My favorite new app is Layover by Peak Systems - you can layer up to 5 images, there are sliders to adjust the opacity and thumbnails along the bottom of the page. It's much more interactive and useful for layering images than Photoshop on my mac. Well maybe the price of the book was worth it, I love Layover. Back to the book - I also didn't think many of the tutorials were all that good. Much of the artwork appeared to be put together quickly. I donated this book to my book arts group. Hopefully someone there will find it more useful.

A work of love
David's book is a concentrated effort of dedication and love. We were a loosely associated group of international artists who discovered we could do art on our iPhones. Some of the apps created Groups on Flickr and we (I) thought, that's fun, I can do that. Then others said "How'd you do that, what app?" and from the beginning this group was about sharing. Seeing this book come to fruition and sharing not only those early techniques (the app I began on never made it to the iPad) is good for historical reasons (we were there with you, David Hockney) but also because these are very useful tutorials.Large, lush-colored photos, step by step processes (and yes, it is all there) plus the dialogue to the side on why-wherefore. In fact, there was and is an amazing amount of things still to be learned for me as well. I've been enjoying re-reading how everyone did what and re-discovering old apps long in storage that work again in a different capacity.

Great Inspiration for digital artists.
This book showcases 70 digital artists who use iPad and IPhone to create artworks. Each artist offers a brief instruction of how he or she created the artwork, included step by step pictures, information, plus his or her background. A full page size picture shows the finished artwork, and a several small sized pictures show the artwork in process. All pictures are in full color, high quality.I like the book because I like these artworks which give me ideas of creations.I like the book also because these artists show what apps they use and how they use. Some of the apps are new to me. I went to the app store to download them and try on my artworks.I have to say that this is one of the books from which I really learned a great deal of digital art.

Pure Inspiration!
The only complaint I have about this book is that it's heavy! But that means there's lots of good stuff in it! Fist there's a short overview of the history of mobile digital art and the early days (actually not that many years in the past) of cell phone cameras. Then there are sections on different artists and how they create their art. It helps a lot to download the apps they use and play around with them enough to get a feel for how they work and what they can do. This is not for beginners as many basic app and iPhone functions are not explained, but those with some basic iPhone camera skills and their own imagination will be inspired!

THE book for the Creative iDevice User!
I was so in love with this book from the moment that I first got it! I'm always on the lookout for new books in which I can explore my creativity. This book is overflowing with real people, real ideas and real apps that will supercharge your imagination. I like to use it as an idea book where, if I'm stuck, I will open it to a random page and look at the artist and the creations they made along with how they were created. This is a book filled to the brim with ways to express yourself on both iPad and iPhone which will make you look at these devices in an exciting new way! BUY THIS BOOK!

Best book I have bought in years... So exciting!
Omg! I almost wish I had not ordered this book! because it's now 2:00 am and I have to get up soon..but no. Even if I get no sleep at all, I don't care. This book is beautiful, informative and well-written. Terrific tips, great exposure to what artists are doing with the technology...and even tho it's hard to stay current with all the new apps coming out daily, this referenced so many I didn't know about and they are all amazing! And as much as I embrace technology, I love print books, and this one looks, feels (and frankly, at the risk of sounding crazy, smells) terrific. I buy several books a week and never rave...but this book is amazing.

Disappointing
You won't learn much about making your own art on the iPad or iPhone with this book. It's mostly a showcase of others artwork. The "tutorials" are very limited with the artist talking about why they did something and not how they did it. It's a pretty book and makes a good coffee table book, but honestly I could have just searched iPad or iPhone art and looked at great art. I'd recommend iPad for Artists if you're looking for in depth tutorials and a "how to" approach.

Interesting read
As a professional artist I am always fascinated by the way that other creative people use different media and techniques.Over the last few years there has been an explosion in apps and software aimed at the digital artist, and as this has found its way onto tablets and smartphones, it is really interesting to see how various users have taken this technology 'out and about' to do their creating in unusual places. This book shows the work of a number of creatives, working in a fantastic variety of styles and techniques. It also has some "step-by-step" pages, so that you can see how certain images are built. If you are already creating on a tablet or phone then this book will be of interest to you I feel sure.

Very Inspiring and Informative book
Have just finished reading this intriguing book. Most impressed by the diverse artists in this book who present their talents and skills in this not so new medium. Inspired by the nature of creating and sharing with others on the web...the sharing seems to be an integral part of the process and the generosity of the artists is very heart warming. Baffled and excited by all the new apps available but this book skillfully guides you through endless choices. Usually get out my paint box and brushes when I'm on holiday but this time I was glued to my ipad. Don't think for one minute you cannot draw or paint........you can !

Not what I expected
Not as good as I expected. I also own iPhone Obsessed by Dan Marcolina and iPhone Artistry by Dan Burkholder and find these much more inspirational and helpful.

lots to inspire
Lots of stuff in here to make you want to grab your ipad and draw. A beginer may struggle with it but still worth getting as it shows what can be achieved on your iphone/ipad. Only had the book a few days but already got a few tips from it and ideas on how to achieve various effects. The book is heavy but good quailty feel to it. A pleasure to hold and read. Inside everything is well laid out and the illustrations are great.A good informative read with eye candy.
