Joy Of Boogie & Blues

There is a nice selection of pieces in the book, all of which are easy to play but which don’t sound elemental. It’s fun to play and truly a good example of ‘the joy.’

I took lessons as a kid and had three books in this series. I stopped playing for many years and as an adult want to restart. I still have the old books marked up with my old teachers comments! I would recommend getting any books from this arranger they are great for beginner to intermediate.

These are great tunes to build your repertoire and go from late beginner to intermediate piano player. No five stars because the online tracks are mislabeled! i.e., Boogie No 1 is numbered 2 on the sheet music but the no. 2 online track is called Ballad Improvisation. Just go by the numbers! Ballad Improvisation is actually Boogie No. 1. Somebody at Hal Leonard needs to get a hold of this problem and get the numbers and names to match up! Otherwise, if you have a year or so of piano lessons under your belt, and want to start playing blues and boogie woogie....this is the book to get! The online Playback+ feature is great for learning the tunes. You can slow the tune down and take it note-by-note. Then gradually speed it up as you progress until you can play it at full speed without help from the online track. You can loop the difficult parts and practice them over and over until you get it. You need to be able to read sheet music at a advanced beginner level. There is almost no pedal and very few dynamics. Everything is written in keys an advanced beginner should have no problem with. If you want to be successful playing blues and boogie woogie, you should start practicing the blues scales (1, 3flat, 4, 5flat, 5, 7flat) because most of these tunes are written using the blues scale. All of these tunes can be found on YouTube played by various people at various speeds. Every one is rockin' enough to play for family or friends or even at a gig.

My favorite of Denes Agay's two Boogie and Blues Books. I like the slower, haunting melodies like "Another Shade of Blue" and "Blue Waltz". The level of playing is suitable for beginners to intermediate plus. Some songs are more difficult than others which lends the book more versatility. Lots of different levels and tempos to chose from.

The whole "Joy of" series is great!The book starts with the easiest pieces and moves to the more challenging, so it's easy to find your sweet spot.

A nice book of blues "etudes" to use in conjunction with a method book and/or a teacher: good pieces, but no instructional text. A couple of things about the CD, though: 1) the tracks are numbered correctly but misnamed, so if you need track 4, just play track 4, and don't worry that it seems to be named something else.; 2) the performances sound like a classical pianist without blues experiencing playing the tunes as written, without swinging eighth notes or using much in the way of blues expression, so you're probably just better off working from the text and/or finding YouTube performances.

Great book. I haven’t listened to the CD yet but it’s good to have when learning. A good price for the book and CD together.

Au vu du titre, il n'y a pas beaucoup de morceaux dans ce recueil mais cela suffit amplement pour quelqu'un dans l'apprentissage du piano, les morceaux permettent de progresser, sont plutôt simples, et sonnent très bien, je recommande fortement à quelqu'un dans l'apprentissage du piano
