Q: Is the Sienna Easel difficult to assemble?

No, provided you have two people

Q: Will the Sienna easel handle small canvases as well as large?

Yes. For small canvases, use the top two canvas holders. That's all you'll ever likely use unless you work on a canvas more than 4 foot tall. It also has panel clips. I bought this easel a year ago and haven't regretted it. I generally use between 8x10 and 24x36 sized canvases and panels.

Q: Can the base be folded flat (in order to get through doors, stairways... etc.), and how much assembly is required?

No, it cannot be folded. You'll need at least a 32" door opening to get it into or out of the room. Stairs will be near impossible unless you disassemble. Assembly takes about an hour and you'll need two people for one step.
