How does it "lock" into place?

The pad has some rigidity to it because there is an air barrier sewn into the middle. Also Herdwick wool is course and rigid by nature. You buy a Flueblocker that is a few inches large for the hole you are fitting it into, and it holds via a pressure fit. It is better to buy one that is too large and trim it down, you just don't want one that is too small.

Fist identify your flue and see if it is circular, square or rectangular. Then take a measurement left to right and front to back. does this work on a double fireplace?

By a double fireplace do you mean a fireplace that has two hearth openings that face two room spaces? Fireplaces like that are generally large, and have quite large dampers, but they vary greatly. It would be rare for a small Flueblocker like this to fit a large fireplace. This size usually goes in small pocket fireplaces or old coal burner fireplaces.
