how do you turn it off? I have slowly tried every position on the switch even the multifunction switch. Could it be defective?

The sliding switch has 4 positions, laser, flashlight, ultraviolet, and off, The positions are well defined

Is this one or three items?

It's just one item that does all of these things. I usually only use the red dot but , so far, it works great.

Do you have to hold the slide power button in place, or are you able to turn it on and let releasethe button?

You slide it to turn it on, keep sliding to go to blue light and flash light, but you don’t have to hold the button while using. Just slide it back when you are done. I’ve been very pleased with this one. Has the one you had to hold a button on, and the button would slide inside and get lost. I also really like the fact that I can just plug it in to a USB to charge it, it charges fast and holds a charge for quite awhile. I’ve been pleased. 😁

Why do all the reviews and most questions talk about bags? i thought this was a pointer.

If you are refering to the cat laser pointer, I don't know what bags you are refering to, the rotary switch on the front switches between various laser light object including to a pin pointer
