Download/installation of Creative's drivers/software is a MUST.
I've been a believer in Soundblaster stuff for a VERY long time, but the last time I got/used one was an Audigy notebook card that had to be inserted in a PCMCIA slot, and tended to be very glitchy interacting with the OE audio card/drivers. Once it was working though ... fabulous. Now I've moved on to a laptop with a PCIe/NVMe-based SSD boot drive running Windows 10, and as always, quickly realized its onboard sound card (Realtek) is junk for driving anything other than the teeny onboard speakers, so I went back to the Creative well to see what they've been up to these days. I was very happy to find this inexpensive, USB-based, "plug and play" Soundblaster card that seemed like it had all the same basic functionality I needed/used in my old card, so I bought it. I primarily use this device for listening to music from my MP3 collection at my workstation, which is equipped with a pair of bookshelf Infinitys, an Infinity powered subwoofer, dedicated rack amp and 15-band stereo equalizer. The Realtek output from the laptop headphone jack is "ok," but just doesn't deliver a signal with the gain/quality I'm used to hearing from MY rig … like putting kerosene into the gas tank of a Ferrari. So I plugged this thing in; it really is "plug and play" easy; overrode the Realtek audio card with no trouble of any kind, and, without doing anything more than that, I noticed a big improvement in both sound quality and signal gain. However, I still wasn't totally blown away like I was with my original Soundblaster card, and just figured, e.g., "oh well, whaddya expect for $20?" Then I remembered Creative has its own, custom drivers and software for this device, and figured I'd try that and see if it made any difference. The answer to that question is a RESOUNDING yes. Another boost in gain, but more importantly, I now heard the same crystalline frequency separation/response that I loved about my old Soundblaster card. All that 24-bit Soundblaster "mojo" is still in this little gizmo, but you can't stop/settle at just "plug and play" on generic audio drivers ... you really have to download and install Creative's custom drivers/software to get the best performance out of their device. Anyway, hope the review helps ... I feel that, when used with Creative's drivers/software, this device delivers everything it's supposed to, and is WELL worth the cost.

Fantastic Great Sounding product thats priced right!
I'm very impressed with this product as the sound is so much better than I expected! I had a customer with a high end streaming PC that failed and was changed out with a replacement PC but the new PC had no on board audio out so I decided to try this unit based on price, reviews and the fact I could get it quick with Amazon Prime and get my customer back online ASAP! And the fact I have had good luck with this brand over the years with PC speakers and such so I tried it. I'm blown away how much better the sound is vs me using the old built in 3.5mm PC's audio out! Its a huge better sound improvement! I only need the audio out so I have not tried the microphone input but is nice to have if I ever need it. I'm a pro sound tech on my day job and a audiophile at night so I know great sound! this is GREAT SOUND! Was plug -n-play no drivers or software needed and even though I did not buy this unit looking for great sound that is exactly what I now have ! Fantastic Great Sounding product thats priced right!

These work fine on MacOS26.2 and sound great!
Works with Mac. At first, I had an issue where audio was doing very strange things, changing bitrates would change the weirdness, no bass, all bass, no mids... cutting in and out, digital noise.... Lots of searching led to multiple things saying MacOS 26.2 is simply not compatible with these WHICH IS FALSE. The problem was a faulty audio connection AFTER the usb adapter, that worked fine with some other adapters, somehow, but somehow caused this to freak out. I fixed the wire, tried again, and man... it works great. Sounds very good. Compared it the OE adapter and generic cheap adapter, Sound Blaster Play 3 is much much better to my ears, blows them out of the water.

Great tube-like sound. Warm bass tones. Not overdone either. Decent enough mids and highs.
I love the sound of a well played bass guitar. Don't you? I think all the great bands had great bass guitarists. McCartney. Greenwood. Novoselic. The list goes on and on. Many of today's indie bands have great bass playing/composition. I think too many DACs these days are aiming for vocal clarity, detail digging and things that focus on the mid and higher frequencies of music. I like DACs like this one that can really make the beginning of Come Together by the Beatles sound fun and engaging, cuz that has to be one of the greatest opening bass riffs of all time, right? In fact, I use that song to test my audio equipment. This DAC delivers beautiful well-placed bass tones. Not the thump, thump part. The deep Dmmmm part.. That part of the song is placed more prominently and accurately than even the sacred, Dragonfly Black, which I also tested. The Black has better soundstage, but again, only if you're just not that into bass guitars. The sound might be a little distorted, but what do you expect from a DAC powered by device USB hosting? Even the Black is distorted (on the low end). It's not plugged into the wall, so... And at least this one doesn't have some stupid LED light wasting your battery or hurting performance or both. Considering all this, I LOVE THIS DAC!! It improved the sound of my Samsung Galaxy Tab A Android tablet that I have connected to a Tivoli Audio One by AUX Cable and and OTG cable (necessary or it won't work). The volume comes out a little low, but I can boost the volume on the Tivoli enough to a fun or even slightly obnoxious level. WIthout a powered amp/speaker situation like this, though, you might find this disappointing. The company does, however, make it clear that this item is NOT INTENDED FOR ANDROID/iOS. So that it works at all this way and this well makes me appreciate it and not be too picky about it's flaws. Hope that was helpful. Oh. AND IT ONLY COSTS LIKE TWENTY BUCKS! You can get five of these for one Black. I'm gonna get a second one just in case something happens to this one. Why not? So cheap!

Software drivers significantly improves sound quality
I did not expect this sound card to make such a huge difference in my enjoyment of music from my laptop. I have Bower & Wilkins M-1 speakers, powered by an external amp wired to my laptop dock. Never really optimized this setup because this is just my workstation. Then I randomly saw this sound card on one late night Amazon browsing session. I remember having Sound Blaster cards in the 90s/00s, and although very few people buy sound cards today, I figured if I have B&W speakers, for $17, what the heck, let's just try it and return it if it sucks. When I first plugged it in, there was notable improvement: bass a little less muddled and higher clarity on the high-end, but you'll have to play music loudly to hear it. I did expect the improvement to be higher, so I was a bit disappointed, but at $17, it was still worth keeping. After all, sound DACs are pretty simple chips these days, and even laptop docks will have what we considered high-end DACs decades ago. But got bored and decided to install the drivers. Who installs drviers anyways, when it works out of the box? Anyway, I installed the Sound Blaster Play! 3 Control Panel (the official drivers), played with the settings, and WOW: ** My music came ALIVE. ** Turning it off and on, it's just such a dramatic improvement. This might be the biggest upgrade I've bought to my sound system. 100% recommend! I'm so glad I took this chance.

Suits my needs amazingly well
Let me make it clear: I am not an audiophile or a gamer, so this review is not written from their perspectives. I simply wanted decent quality sound to come out of my computer -- an old hp laptop. This Sound Blaster Play! 3 External USB Sound Adapter gives me just that. In fact, to be honest, it surpasses my hopes and expectations. There was a learning curve for using the provided software, like, for example, how to use the device when recording music, etc. But a little "trial and error" schooling quickly taught me what I needed to know; like to turn off the SBX Pro Studio and Equalizer when recording. I learned to use these features on playback only. I paired this simple little adapter with a Kinter K2020A+ Class-T Hi-Fi Audio Mini Amplifier with 12V 5A Power Supply (gives me 25 watts peak power output) and a pair of Saiyin DS6700M Passive Bookshelf Speakers (all available on Amazon). Wow! I Love the results. If you expect sound equivalent to a $1200 stereo system with top-of-the-line Bose speakers, you will be disappointed; but if you're looking for really good sound from your computer without breaking the bank, this in my opinion is a good way to get it.

Killed the hiss on my laptop – sound is way clearer now
Here are a few review drafts for the Creative Labs Sound Blaster Play! 3 External USB Sound Adapter (the tiny black USB DAC/amp that upgrades to 24-bit/96kHz playback, plug-and-play with no drivers needed for basics, 3.5mm headphone out + mic in, drives everything from earbuds to studio headphones, ~93dB SNR). Wrote 'em in your casual Aaron-from-Clearfield-Utah style: straightforward, practical guy fixing crappy onboard sound for music/gaming/calls, hyped on the clearer audio, no hiss/static in the dry winter air, easy USB plug-in for laptop or desktop, and great value since it's cheap but punches up big time.

Works perfectly on ChromeOS!
I have an old laptop in my garage that I installed ChromeOS on. The built-in audio sounded awful on this OS for some reason, which was very noticeable on the big RCF speakers I have out there. So, I tried one of these hoping it would resolve the issue. I am pleased to say it did! It worked right away and the sound is absolutely outstanding. It sounds very full and it is also much louder, so I don't need to have the volume on the amp turned up nearly as much. I am very happy!

Awesome
Really good volume output. No buzzing or humming. Works on my Switch 2 as well.

Greate addition to your PC (or Mac)
I have a PC with a normal embedded 48KHz Sound Card, with no empty slot for a new one... I was desperate. But now, with this USB Sound Blaster Play! 3, I have the chance to get the quality I always wanted. It is crystal clear and powerful. One last Advice: although it can work immediately after plugging in with no need for a driver, I strongly encourage you to install its driver from the Creative website. It will give you an easy-to-use yet powerful control panel with useful controls to meet your customized needs.

Cheapest way for better audio
My sound blaster 24 bit external finally gave out after 17 yrs and 3 OS (XP, 7 and 10) My MB onboard audio was nice for the highs but lacking in the lows. So I decided to try this out. Still thanking myself. It's plug&play, contrarily to my old device. But you will need the software package to take advantage of the head phone amp or crystalizer. You have access to different parameters thru your audio settings. Definitely recommend!
