OUTSTANDING!
This product has saved me tons of money and heart ache. These "repair" companies will charge 200-300 dollars for a $20-25 dollar capacitor and 5 minutes of "labor". This is my 2nd unit I've replaced in 5 years. It did the trick again on a hot summer day. I bought an extra for the next time. Thanks again Genteq!

Parts + 15 minutes to repair your own Air Conditioning Unit.
One of the previous reviews asked how excited one could be over a capacitor. I guess that depends upon the circumstances. Considering the heat for the last 3 days while waiting for the capacitor to arrive I was very excited to see it show up several days early. The capacitor is required to start the fan motor, (the 5 uf side of it, you can start the fan manually, by spinning the blades in a clockwise direction) but, the 40 uf side starts and runs the compressor. (The compressor is a heavy load and the capacitor provides additional torque to keep the compressor running). The connectors on the new capacitor had the same markings as the original which made it easy to connect it properly. It took about 15 minutes to remove the cover, install the capacitor, replace the cover and test the AC unit. This time yesterday, my office was unbearably hot, today, it is nice and cool.Diagnosing the problem is easy.1. The compressor and fan would not start2. Spinning the fan blades allowed the fan to start3. The housing for the compressor/fan is hot to the touch.4. Visual inspection of the capacitor it's self shows the top being 'bulged' not flat. (The bottom will be 'bulged' as well but not very visible, sit it on a flat surface and it will 'rock'). See the enclosed picture.Gaining access to the capacitor in my case required removal of 2 screws and loosening 2 screws.Removal of the capacitor required removal of two screws and detaching the leads (4 total in my case, 2 yellow leads connected to the C (common) terminal, 1 brown lead connected to the FAN terminal, and 1 blue lead connected to the HERM terminal). The leads attach to the capacitor with quick disconnects that can be easily pulled from the tabs on the capacitor, pull on the connector not the wire.Reverse the process to install the capacitor.Since I did not have the new capacitor when I removed the old one, I marked where each color went for quick reference.Hint: if you see any bulging at all in the capacitor, that is enough to merit replacing it.The fact that you can do all of this yourself means your cost is about 12 dollars to fix the problem, beats hiring an HVAC tech for a minimum of $100.

Made in Mexico, will give it a chance
Works just fine Hopefully its made by a U.S. company so gave it five stars on that basis. On a new heat pump the original capacitor lasted ten years, the Chinese replacement lasted five years and the maintenance company replaced it with another Chinese capacitor. Fooled me once. Lets see if Mexico has U.S. manufacturing quality. These things go in the hottest weather so you may want to open up the unit and buy a spare, instead of waiting for service for days in the hottest weather. They are connected with push on tabs so a child can replace them so long as you shut the power off for them.

Inexpensive
My HVAC guy said I might need a new one soon. I bought this one online and will keep it on hand to install myself when necessary... rather than pay the outrageous price he quoted!

AC running again, cheap fix a lot of the time
Well, its a capacitor. How excited can you really get about a capacitor ? After some simple diagnostics with my AC unit not running I purchased this new cap and hoped nothing else was wrong. That was the case. With the new cap installed, the compressor and fan both kicked in normally and started making cold air again. My original was also a GE Genteq 40 + 5 uf dual cap but 370 V rated. That one ran for 14 years. I couldn't find a 370 V cap for next day shipping so I substituted this 440 V unit. This substitution is fine; going to a higher break-down voltage is OK but you never want to go the other way and use a lower rated cap.I checked the capacitance of the new unit before installing it just to make sure it was OK. It was. It measured 40.6 + 5.4 uf. The old dead one was dead on both contacts; reading 17 nf.These caps are called motor-run capacitors, but they are also REQUIRED for starting your compressor and fan motor. Some compressors will have a second capacitor called a motor-start capacitor. Some compressors are designed to start with or without a separate start-cap. When these compressors get older they can become more sluggish at start-up and may require the addition of a separate start-cap often refered to as a kick-start or jump-start. Your fan does not require a separate start-cap. So, if your fan starts up normally but the compressor just hums and shuts off, you may need a new compressor start-cap. If the fan wont start on its own, you probably need one of these dual-run caps. There are other reasons why your AC may not be working but the dual run cap is a very common problem and very easy to replace.
