Q: Can I cover the backround wiith burlap?

This already has a nice fabric covering on the inside backing of the frame.

Q: Can you use without the interior piece?

When you buy a picture frame there is usually some kind of image inside just to identify how ir may be used. When you take the back off, you should throw that picture away and mount your picture or raised object in there instead. The point in using a "shadow box" is that the thing you put in it has some dimension to it, that it just doesn't lie flat. If by "without the interior piece" you mean, without the backing, I suppose you could take it off and just use the frame to frame something on the wall?
