Friendship and hobbies
This was better than I expected. I thought this was going to be about school-hobby-life balances blowing up, but it was instead about unlikely friendship. The character interactions were grounded but silly enough to be amusing. There was some drama explosions about 2/3 in that felt kind of forced for story, but other than that it was a solid read.

Great Story and Great Illustrations!
This book is super popular at my school. People giving it 4 stars because the character Sunna doesn't line up with their own view of how a hijabi should act and be are not fitting for a children's book. This is a 5 star read that kids will get on bord with.

A story packed with heart and beautifully drawn
This is an absolutely lovely book! The story was a delight and it touches on so many issues at the heart of a typical middle schooler's life: balancing friendships and expectations and changes and parents and yo-yo tricks at the same time! Well, maybe yo-yo tricks aren't typical middle schooler fare, but they should be. The world would be a better place if they were. My kid loves this book so much I had to sneak it out of his room after bedtime to finish reading it myself. It's a treat!

Friendship
Freestyle is an excellent graphic novel telling the story of friends in middle school. This book is a fantastic reminder that growing up and figuring out who you are and who you want to be isn’t easy. The art is excellent and the story is very believable.

a great mg book about friendship
(Disclaimer: I received this book from the publisher. This has not impacted my review which is unbiased and honest.)First of all, who doesn't love the idea of a middle grade break dancing crew? Freestyle is a tender middle grade graphic novel about friendship. What I loved about Freestyle is that it examines when we have our "set" group of friends, but also find new ones. I think this lesson we have to learn as middle graders is huge. It's when we can become self-concious not only about ourselves, but things we've always done. There's something about sharing our friends and how that feels, which I think is a universal feeling for all of us.
