(And who would ever think about writing a review for a swimmer's pull buoy! - aren't they all the same ?) The answer is the buoy's somewhat pebbly texture on the outside. It keeps the buoy in place - no slipping ! I have been swimming for a long time with a Masters' swim program. We have many buoy makes available to us, and they are essentially the same as one another. I bought this solely because of its color-lime green.
