The ambience of evil permeating the prologue piqued my interest, and McWhirter's amazing ability to create a vivid setting continues throughout the book. I am not an avid reader of fantasy, but I found this story to be highly enjoyable with characters and themes that extend beyond the confines of the genre. In Jonas, the author has created a believable character whose strength and goodness are developed convincingly throughout the story. Supporting characters are also intriguing and likable, particularly the craggy, legendary warrior Kiln. Relationships between the characters are realistic and affecting. The story moves at a steady pace with episodes of intense action - sometimes quite violent - erupting periodically. The most prominent aspect of McWhirter's writing talent is in his description. This author has the rare ability to paint a rich mental picture, transporting the reader to the imaginary world of Kraawn through words alone. As I read, I was struck by how easily I imagined each battle, each journey, and each conversation. The Cavalier represents an excellent debut from Jason McWhirter.
