Is there a solution to make it drain faster?

No, there's not a solution these sink strainers drain faster. I bought two of them and if I want to run my water more than just a stream, I have to remove the drains.

Is this wide enough to use it to cover the pop up stopper of a lavatory sink if we don't want to remove the stopper?

Do you mean by inverting it? I don't think it will. The opening being only 2 1/4 inches wide it likely will not cover a drain opening with stopper still installed. Both conventional pop-up drain stoppers, as well as the more modern, are fairly easy to remove though. These do fit easily into the hole if you remove the stopper.

does this work for bathtub drain?

I would suggest that you measure the circumference of your bathtub drain first. A "standard" bathtub drain measures a 1+1/2 inch circumference, however, your drain may be different. The circumference of this product (of the actual basket) is 1 only one inch. So, while it may fit your tub's drain it may have too much "wiggle" room. As a result, it would not be as effective as a truly proper fit. Perhaps you should measure first, then do an Amazon search for a bathtub drain with your precise measurement requirements.
