without the sponge a small gas canister (240g) will fit inside the kit along with the burner and spoon/fork.

Can these be used on an open fire...?

They’re designed for use with a C500 Coleman gascanister, and I wouldn’t recommend an open fire

Where do you suggest attaching the carabiner to secure this to a bag?

The bag has a nice strong drawstring on it, so you could use that to tie it to suit where it would hang on your bag...
