Introducing Mathematics: A Graphic Guide Paperback – September 1, 2011

It is insufficient to state that this book encompasses a great deal of knowledge that the every day person is lacking. The lacking not being a result of ignorance but of a failure on behalf of public schools and myriad of other societal variables.

This is a highly readable and nicely-, humorously-illustrated quick intro to maths of all sorts. Moving on from fundamentals, like bases and counting, the reader is provided with a number of jumping off points for further study; it's of course more about breadth than depth in a book like this, but the concepts are so clearly presented you can easily find what you're looking for.The only things I can pick out as lacking are some of the more fundamental portions of the trigonometry section - more meat instead of presenting a glut of formulas would have been helpful - and a near complete avoidance of matrices, though groups and sets are both included. Given the type of person I'd think would be reading a book like this, the lack of matrix theory and linear algebra seems like an oversight considering their modern use in technology.A section on calculus with a clear, real-world example of first and second derivatives and integrals was refreshing though, and brought back memories of math I'd not thought about in years. That's the sign of good presentation by authors who know their subject matter inside and out. I'd recommend it based on the calculus section alone.Overall, I'd say this is worth a read if you're at all interested in the fundamentals of mathematics. It's quick, too, and can be read in a sitting. Be forewarned, though: some subject in here will probably hook you and you'll likely want to read more.

As with other books in the series, sometimes clarity is unfortunately sacrificed in the service of brevity. There are a few places where errors in the dialog balloons in the cartoons sabotages the flow (and accuracy) of the main text. Otherwise, the book is a good survey of mathematics organized in roughly chronological order of the relevant discoveries and developments. It is a good place to start but like many e-books the formatting of formulas is sometimes lost so view them with caution.

I liked its really original approach to maths , recomend it to any teacher or student of Math or physics.I enjoyed it.

This book is a good introduction to the world of mathematics, for people whose looking forward to understand how mathematics became what it is today.

Poor writing filled with mathematical errors, poor topic flow, random illustrations that have nothing to do with the subject, terms are introduced without definition, and the lack of historical throughline shows poor understanding of mathematical history and development.I read lots of math books, and also enjoy good inspirational introductory overviews of the subject to share with others…this is not one of them.
