St John was born Juan de Yepes y Ãlvarez near Avila, Spain, in 1542. His father died when he was about 7 and left the family penniless. He felt the call to religious life early and received a good education in spite of the family's poverty. He was ordained and decided to become a Carthusian monk, but changed his mind after meeting St Teresa of Avila. She was attempting to reform the Carmelite order and asked him to help her. He spent the rest of his life working with St Teresa, becoming spiritual director and confessor at her convent in Avila. He is still known as one of Spain's finest poets and writers. Among his books are "The Dark Night" and "Sayings of Light and Love". He was beatified in 1675 and became a doctor of the church in 1926.The reverse of the medal shows St Teresa of Avila.
