Louis of France was crowned king at the age of 12. At his coronation he vowed to act as an anointed king, a father to his people, and a feudal lord of the Prince of Peace; and at age 19 he married Marguerite of Provence. The union was blessed with 11 children. He worked in France to build hospitals and provide for the sick and needy throughout his kingdom. Each day he invited 13 poor people to eat with him and provided meals for additional poor people who visited his castle, occasionally providing the food himself at the gates. He also brought peace and justice to France, uniting the nobles and peasants under his firm but just rule. He first fought in the crusades at age 30, and left his home again to fight in the holy land at age 41.
