Excellent read for the entire family.
Easy to read, 15-30 minutes, and imparts such detail as the last process of our lives progress.

A great guide helping us know what to expect
A very informative book helping to educate us in the dying process. This book also addresses the need for caregivers to take care of themselves.

Great refresher.
Im a hospice RN, This book is a great refresher all nurses should read! I only docked a star because the later half of the book was more on finances and whatnot. I found it simple and helpful how easy it was to follow along, I also took notes and highlighted the important aspects, mostly in how to explain how or why certain things happen during end of life, for example the nausea, agitation, or even hallucinations.

VERY HIGHLY RECOMMEND
I can't exactly say the book topic was "enjoyable" or that it was purchased as a "pleasure read" but I DID and DO find some comfort in it... Having said goodbye to my dearly loved Mom not even two months ago due to cancer, I found myself wishing as I read, that I'd found the book BEFORE this painful but necessary journey started. It would have been so helpful for myself and my family! However I guess it wasn't meant to be until now. Reading this book felt like a conversation with a trusted friend. It felt almost as if we'd had a conversation on a difficult painful topic and afterwards I found support in the fact we'd talked and shared a hug. The book is simple, practical and easily read in one sitting --although I will likely go back for a reread because of the understanding it brought and the validation that what I experienced was a part of life, normal and inevitable. Thanks Katie Duncan for an informative and meaningful book!

Essential Information for both you & the person you love.
Although I cried all the way through this book I'm so glad it is available & that I did read it. It was recommended by my sister whose beloved husband is dying. It is a frank & compassionate narration of what death is like for the dying & one's role in that process. The book also offers an explanation of the practical necessities that will need to be carried out before & after death. I encourage anyone & everyone to read it. We all die & I for one had no idea of what needed to be done & how to comfort my brother-in-law or how to help my sister. Thank You. Bless you.

Really, really, really basic
I have cared for several people who were dying. I certainly don't think I'm an expert. But while the information is clear and attractively presented, accurate as far as I know, it didn't add to what I've already learned. If you have no medical experience and you've never cared for a dying person, you do need to know what's in this book. But don't expect more than an introduction. The material could have been covered in a two-page pamphlet. The subject is huge, and I'm sure Duncan is trying not to overwhelm novices while at the same time reassuring them. The book succeeds on both counts. But $11.73 is a lot to pay for only 51 large type, double-spaced pages.

Every family should have a copy
I would recommend this book to everyone since we will all be there one day, needing to be understand what is happening when a loved one is transitioning from life to death. As a Hospice nurse, I follow Duncan's recommendations and they really help a great deal. A great motto is "prepare not scare". If you understand what you are seeing, it takes a good deal of fear away.Quick read. Right on the mark.

Excellent Encouraging Practical
This book should be read by anyone caring for a dying person. It's for people of all beliefs. The book is short with lots of practical advice from how to moisten lips to what to do when your loved one takes his/her last breath. I particularly appreciated the suggestion to appoint a spokesperson (see one of the quotes below). The author is extremely qualified and experienced. Excellent! Some quotes:We learn to see death and dying as a tragic failure, which it is not. Rather, it is simply a part of our life’s journey. It is a part of our story. And it is our mortality that makes our lives precious, treasured, and meaningful. To help prevent burnout, delegate a spokesperson, someone who will communicate to others on your behalf and the only person you will need to keep informed. This person may be a close friend, another family member, or someone you trust. Feel encouraged to direct everyone to this dedicated spokesperson from the start of your loved one’s end-of-life journey. Release the pressure of this responsibility.Giving your loved one your permission to die is perhaps the most beautiful gift you could ever give them. Treasure this knowledge deep in your heart as you permit them to leave this physical world, and launch them with love and grace into the realms of the unknown.

Absolutely brilliant
So glad I purchased this book it has really helped me. I am nursing my husband from home. My husband was 80 last August during these last few years he's had a stroke with side affect of epileptic seizures, also in the last 6 months has had covid twice the last time being at this Christmas 2022 it's knocked him so far sideways he gave up. This book has really helped me to understand what he is now going through. I wouldn't be without it. Thank you Katie Duncan you have been a lifesaver for me.

The sort of book you call on to support friends and family
Gentle, respectful, specific, full of compassion, but not sentimental. Unlike some reviews, the relative short length is not an issue for me. It just means there is no 'filler' and it is not draining to read at a time when you need your resources for supporting loved ones through their dying. I am very thankful to have found this book.

An insightful and thought provoking read.
This book is very insightful and a must read for anyone who finds themselves as the caregiver to a loved one, but this book is not just for caregivers. It is very eye opening and beautifully combines personal experiences with facts, practical guidance and inspiring quotes. It covers both looking after a loved one and also how to manage your own feelings during a very difficult time. It has allowed me to consider death very simply as a part of life and one that doesn't necessarily need to be feared. Would recommend to anyone who wants to know a little more on the subject.
