No it is not completely silent. It squeaks and makes a noise like nails on a chalkboard. Irritating. Do not buy if you want a quiet clock

Can someone tell me how light or dark the wood is? Wanting to get close to a golden oak table.

I returned mine. I loved the look but the wood is pressboard. And the hands and gears are plastic. In fact the hands are paper thin plastic. Very poorly made for the price although i loved the look . I never removed from box. Needed batteries that were not sold except online. Carbon zinc . I hope this helps you in deciding .

How long will gear batteries last? Can the gears be slowed down?

New batteries generally will last 3 months. Gears will slow down when the battery is low.
