Goodman and Gilman's The Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics, 14th Edition

Very complete and detailed pharmacology text. This is not the book for you if you want a concise review of drugs and prescribing information. But if detailed description of the mechanism of action of the drug this is a great book. It is a bit of a tome so you won't be carrying it around. Keep it in your office or study.

Detailed, comprehensive--the best pharmacology book out there.

I had read the 3rd edition of Goodman and Gilman's "The Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics" while I was a Biochemistry student taking the Pharmacology course at the University of Utah. I was fortunate to have had Dr. Goodman as one of the instructors for the course and I enjoyed reading the textbook (reference book). I recently needed to review some pharmacological data so I decided to purchase the more recent 14th edition which certainly lived up to my expectations as a valuable and up to date reference. I was impressed with the well designed, colorful figures and tables that accompany the well written text.

This is an outstanding textbook of pharmacology. I use it in my classes to the medical students. My only criticism goes to the bad quality of printing, since some pages came with smudges. Nevertheless, I will keep my physical copy, since the problem did not affect figures.

Better than Best

Bei der Durchsicht des Buches bestätigte sich der Eindruck der Voreditionen: Es handelt sich unverändert um das Referenzwerk der Pharmakologie. Die Synthese zwischen detaillierten Darstellungen des Wirkmechanismus/Interaktionen und den Ausführungen zu klinischen Sachverhalten hat sich in Richtung ersterem verschoben, eine Entwicklung, die eigentlich seit der 6. Auflage stattfindet. Sollte man nach pharmakologischen Therapiekonzepten bei konkreten Krankheitsbildern suchen, benötigt man andere Literatur. Für das Schließen der Lücke zwischen molekularem Wirkmechanismus und klinischer Medizin kann es uneingeschränkt empfohlen werden, beispielsweise im Rahmen der Vorbereitung für Fortbildungen oder Vorlesungen. Leider erfolgte die Lieferung aus dem Vereinigten Königreich sehr schleppend und verzögert. Laut Tracking lag es über eine Woche in einem dpd-Verteilerzentrum in den Niederlanden. Auch die Verpackung war dürftig (kein Polstermaterial bei dünner Papp-Umhüllung) und an drei Ecken aufgerissen, eine Buch-Ecke war angestossen.
