I've worked with pH meters for over thirty years as a laboratory technician and this pH meter is comparable to laboratory pH meters costing over a hundred dollars at a fraction of the cost. Now, it doesn't have quite the same stability or accuracy that you might get with a precision scientific meter and probe but if calibrated immediately prior to use, it is surprisingly accurate. Don't waste your money on the metal rod type of pH meter...they are extremely inaccurate, and pH indicator strips and papers are not much better (pH strips do work OK if you are testing a substance that is a clear liquid and you don't need to be accurate to anything more than single digits...and even single digits are questionable).People often buy the metal rod type of pH meter for garden soil testing, but they are extremely inaccurate. The laboratory method for testing soil is to mix soil and distilled or deionized water in a 1:1 ratio in a clean cup. Stir for 5 minutes and let the solids settle. If your mixture doesn't show any liquid, add another dose of water until you have some free liquid (since pH is measured on a logarithmic scale a little extra water will not change the pH value appreciably). Stick the pH probe into the liquid portion and move it around just a bit (to assure a good reading) and then let it remain stationary until a stable reading is obtained.

Works very well, easy to calibrate, much more accurate and convenient than test strips.
