Story Engineering: Mastering the 6 Core Competencies of Successful Writing

The best book about Writing I’ve ever read
Mr. Brooks brings everything together here. Each section blows my mind wide open with new approaches I can take to all the different aspects of the craft. Only what’s necessary is emphasized and the guidelines on offer are clear but also inspiring. I am more than halfway done, but this is the one writing book I’ve ever wanted to finish, because I know what I learn will change everything about my approach. I tell you this as someone who has at least 50ish books on writing in my library and who’s never finished one of them. This one is different and well worth your time.My only points of criticism are, Mr Brooks gets a little abstract in some of his explanations. What I mean by that is he sometimes stuffs too many technical words into single sentences so that the meaning is lost. For instance, “Subtext is existence of some…pressure that defines or influences the characters.” I understand the sentence but what can I do with that? That aside, if you’re thinking about writing books by this one first.

Ten Stars out of Five! It's THAT Good!
I give this book ten stars out of five! It's that good! Every other book on how to write will make more sense, and be more applicable, AFTER reading this book. This book provides the core knowledge every writer should have before they begin writing. With this book as a foundation, everything else will fall into place. No longer is advice on how to write as vague as: "Read 50 book of the type you would like to write and just sort of figure out how to do it on your own." This book delivers concrete, in-depth, specific story building and story structuring information that will not leave you guessing how to properly structure and organize any type of story you wish to write. This book breaks down the technical aspects of story structuring in enough minute detail that you understand which parts of your story should go where and in what order. For those who wish to be published, these are the story structuring standards that industry professionals expect to see in a publishable work. Flaws in the structures described in this book are what send manuscripts to the rejection pile. It's that simple.

Essential reading for writers.
I've written three non-fiction books that have been published but always wanted to write fiction. I bought a few books on 'how to write fiction' etc and felt confident enough to make a start. Anyway, after 40,000 words I got stuck and was struggling to find a way forward. A frantic search for advice on Google found this book, and boy am I glad I bought it! Larry's style is inspiring, humorous and, above all, well structured and informative. It has helped me plan out and structure my story to the point where I'm more confident of writing a far better book. If you think that planning and structuring a novel before you start may stunt your artistic, creative side - think again. The process in my view actually gives you more freedom to be original and creative. If you're thinking of writing a book, or have struggled in the past, buy this book! It's a real gem.
