Command Performance

Good on ya, Dolph!
A man of many talents is he. Dolph Lundgren can play the drums (no, he's not acting the part of a drummer - he can actually play them), still make heads turn in black leather pants, and beautifully display his flawless physique with or without that vest on.....ok, let's talk about the movie now.Ok guys....this movie is non-stop action from about the first fifteen minutes in til the end. DL knows how to make an action movie. There's a good story line from beginning to end, and the lead female singer is ok, but I was surprised to see DL's oldest daughter in it. She was actually very good for a teen actor - apple doesn't fall far from the tree, DL must be proud. The movie is cast well, the actors are all good and believable, and the fight scenes are well choreographed, as most DL movies are. If you've had a long week, or a bad one, and need to unwind with a good action flick, this is a good one to start your weekend off with. No mushy stuff, even though the lead singer tries - just a good kill the bad guys movie that's written, directed by and starring Dolph Lundgren. He really knows how to deliver a good action movie. Time and experience has been a good teacher to him.

THERE IS NO ENCORE
For all those who have been repeatedly comparing this movie to Die Hard, why not try Under Siege with Steven Seagal? In the latter, we have a cook who outfought the baddies; here we have a drummer who does likewise. After all, Bruce Willis was an active policeman. Furthermore, Command Performance does NOT take place in the 80s nor does it feel like an 80s film. At the very beginning of CP we have a prologue referring to the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 and the fact that all are not happy with the new "capitalist" orientation of the country (that point is only inferred). After an opening scene involving a shooting and suicide of a former high ranking "Soviet" official who is now one of the malcontents, the stage is set for our story. Fast forward a number of years to the present (whatever that is) and we find our hero DL a drummer in a rock band. It is scheduled to serve as a backup accompaniment to singer/dancer Venus. Upon her first encounter with DL, she is quite smitten. He is indifferent (which means that they will both fall passionately in love with each other and wind up in each others' arms by the end of the movie - predictable much?). As our story unfolds, the planned concert takes place in a Moscow Theatre Hall (the movie is actually filmed in Bulgaria) attended by President Petrov and his two daughters (no Putin here). Petrov is a liberal and "capitalist". Shortly after the concert begins (and it IS quite lively - the dancers and the rock group do rock; and so does Petrov's daughters from the vantage point of a private viewing suite). Meanwhile, sneaking into the Hall are the baddies after their leader posing as a chef dispatches two guards with a hunting knife. (Talk about a lack of security or entry checking!) As expected all hell breaks loose shortly afterwards and the body count immediately multiplies dramatically. No further details are necessary. The usual expected action follows as both sides attempt to gain the upper hand. Petrov and his daughters are taken hostage and gradually the reasons for all the hoopla are revealed. Meanwhile, reinforcements show up outside the Hall and a strong willed female major is in charge. She exudes confidence and makes us feel that good will prevail over evil even if everyone perishes in the process. The action then plays out in general predictability with only the specifics that are relevant for this particular film emphasized. Except for a somewhat leathery face, DL still has his physique and mojo. He will not disappoint. Sylvester S. doesn't look as good. In the end, you get exactly what you expected and hoped (?) for. This was a "Command Performance" worth watching though those wishing not to attend don't have to take the title literally.

One of Dolph's Best!
I would say this is easily on of Dolph's best movies. Its a decent although, predicable die hard clone, but for lovers of action movies, it gets the job done. Once the carnage starts up, it never really stops, and true, Dolph only dispatches 11 bad guys, most are quality and entertaining. If you hate 80's action, and tough guys, then find another movie. I though the film had a nice mix of humor and action. To all the Dolph naysayers out their, you just wish that you could go shirtless for a whole movie when your his age. The man has still got it.

Better than Expected but Less than Hoped for
It's always painful for me to watch those in another country abandon their own culture to embrace the worst of ours. Sociologists call it "The Americanization of the World" (the destruction of other cultures) and that's what we bring to the table, the illusion of happiness, prosperity, and quality of life when in reality we're systematically destroying all those things and replacing them with sickness (physical, mental and spiritual), low moral standards and a lack of respect for the virtues.Dolf Lungren did himself a disservice when he chose to portray himself as a rock`n roll star (a drummer in fact) who used to be a biker in L.A. Even though (in real life) he is a great drummer. This movie was about and shot in Russia but pandered to American punk values as if those are the highest social standards you could aspire to. He is a talented actor and director who is aging well, his continence showing good character, but it was all wasted (for me anyway) in this Americanized Russian movie.I think traditional cultures are one of the most valuable things a people have, the loss of which is tantamount to the extinction of a species. They contain all the lessons a people have learned in order to survive and thrive in a certain local and that's what I enjoy the most when I get a chance to see it, the different realities of varied country's cultures.American values and human overpopulation are destroying the planet yet most people celebrate both of them.Party Now! Never mind the consequences ................The movie itself was typical gratuitous action/violence. Maybe that's all you require.

Well Done Dolph!
Dolph, has always been a favorite of mine, for knowing that he's a master of both brain and brawn. This film was something along the lines of a Russian version of Die Hard. The medal Hero of the Soviet Union, is the equivalent of the American Medal of Honor. And in the case of this film, all the actors and actresses earned a motion picture version of it.

ROCK AND LOAD - DOLPH IS BACK!
DOLPH IS BACK, ACTING AND IN THE DIRECTOR'S CHAIR AT THE SAME TIME - AND THE RESULTS COULDN'T BE BETTER. WITH 'THE EXPENDABLES' ON THE HORIZON AND DOLPH ONLY SEEMING TO BE GETTING BETTER AND BETTER AT THE HELM OF HIS OWN ACTION MOVIES, I SEE A GREAT COME BACK FOR THIS GREAT ACTION ICON. COMMAND PERFORMANCE IS NO SIMPLE DIE HARD CLONE, IT'S COOL, ACTION-FILLED, ULTRA VIOLENT, WITTY AND EXPLOSIVE! DON'T MISS IT!
