SnapSafe Treklite Gun Safe Lock Box with TSA Combination Lock

First of all, this IS NOT a safe, and the manufacturer should not call it “Snapsafe.” This is a transport container that is TSA approved for CHECKED baggage when flying, or otherwise traveling. A stout pry tool can easily defeat this container. However, It serves it purpose well !

It is NOT a steel box. I have another that I use for temporary in-car storage but this one was intended for air travel. Purchased another brand at a show. Would recommend for temporary uses.

Not only do I have peace of mind for weapon storage, I also feel like a secret agent who could be gone in a quick minute because it holds my Ruger, my passport, and some cash!!

Seems a little “cheap”, but so far has worked as expected

I'm an avid 2nd amendment and pro carry individual. I've had more training and experience than most folks with a cwp. The military and sheriff's office programs are outstanding. Never settle for those cheap over the counter classes. Find the best and longest classes. You'll learn a lot more.Having said that, the selling point for me here was weight. I have a similar case, all metal made by Hornady and while it too is a great safe, the downside is the 5.6 pound weight before adding contents. In a vehicle not a bother, but in your check in luggage it's a bother and may cause you to pay an extra $100 in overweight baggage fee. Besides that, I don't like drag'n heavy luggage.As the only person who gave this a one star review pointed out, the case has one very small flaw in that the hinge is external. If it was a super big deal I could see a one star rating. But some folks don't know what stars 2 thru 4 mean. If it was a big deal I would have dropped one star down to a 4. But it's not a big deal. You must understand (because he didn't) that if a burglar wanted busted in the car and found the safe, doesn't mean he can get in. Most car burglers want a fast way in and a quicker way out. It's called smash and grab. These guys don't carry any tools let alone the tools necessary to do a fast grab of the contents. It takes too much time and any crook knows that the longer they stay at the scene the more drastic the likelihood of getting caught, shot or killed becomes.Then there's this point "if they don't know it's there and find it, they don't have the tools so they won't get away with it. They'll try though. If someone knows it's there before hand then they will come with the right tool(s). If this is the case th'reen you're the one to blame because you let too many people know about it. Most thefts are caused by people you know so keep yer mouth shut.There's no such thing as a fool proof safe so don't go trying to find one. As you know, crooks don't give a hoot about gun laws. To think otherwise is just ignorant and wishful thinking. If someone wants the safe and access to the contents badly enough, they're gonna get it even if you bolt it down and permanently weld it shut. All a safe is for is 3 things, to make it hard enough to discourage a would be thief and to keep hones men honest. That's it.More education. Snapsafe sells a unit with a TSA lock built in. If tsa needs to open it up they have a common key to do so. DON'T BUY THAT UNIT!IT'S AGAINST FEDERAL LAW for anyone (TSA, AIRLINE EMPLOYEES, HOMELAND SECURITY) to open that safe while yer not present and/or handle the weapon once it's opened. So 1. They can't open it without you being present 2. They can't handle the contents once opened without yer consent.Other problems connected to the TSA lock should be a matter of common sense, but think about the potential for "crooked employees" for starters.So getting the one with the TSA lock is the most incredibly irresponsible thing you can do.I hope this helps you to make a decision on whether to buy or not. My recommendation is, buy metal for the car or truck and buy this for travel and transport (meaning if you have to move the safe a lot). If money is a concern and you need a one to do all then this safe is an excellent choice!

This is not a gun safe! A determined thief (or bored child) can get this box open. Use a different solution for home storage.But, for travel to and from the range, or in your checked luggage, this is a perfect lightweight solution. A 4.5" XDM fits with room to spare. I can fit a second gun in the same case if I remove the end of the flashlight from the XDM.The combo lock is a BIG PROBLEM because it has a TSA key override. Who said the TSA guys are licensed to handle a firearm? If a non-licensed TSA employee removes your firearm from its box, you could be guilty of a felony in that state. I know it's sounds unlikely, but I would rather not be the test case. If the TSA employee wants to go crazy and shoot somebody (God forbid), I would rather him have to break the box open. Better yet, fly with one box for pistols and a second box for magazines (luggage space permitting).I bought 3 of these plastic boxes and keep them in my range bag. I have the metal versions in my car and in my home closet. I intend to buy a set of keyed-alike tubular cam locks and switch them out so I won't have to wrestle with multiple keys.The locks are available from SnapSafe for $10 each, but you have to buy the whole set at once as they will not match locks you already own. I guess that would be a safety vulnerability if you could just order keys by number. I could not find generic locks with the correct sized cam, so I am buying directly from SnapSafe.

While its a nice safe I don't think I would buy a second. The plastic is light and closes up tight but after getting a good look at how it's put together I don't believe it would be very hard to gain access. A couple of hammer swings would probably destroy the hinge. At the very least the hinge pin could be knocked out with only a little effort. As it is now, once locked its easy to pry the two halves apart with a large flathead screw driver. Once this is done a larger implement such as a crow bar could do lot of damage and potentially with two crow bars inserted the top could be pried away from the bottom.So this is not a gun safe by any means, it will serve the purpose of locking a hand gun up while you transport it, this will fulfil legal requirements but little more. A trigger lock is of course needed and fortunately, unless your carrying a cannon, there's enough room inside to accommodate the added depth needed. There are four layers of foam that cover both top and bottom halves included so it's easy to get the right layering to hold things without rattling.The lock is made to close tight, the tab slides into the receiver which is angled, this allows the tab to tension up resulting in no looseness between top and bottom when closed. Also with the lock tab/receiver design, any impact against the top half, right in front of the lock, would result in trying to break past the fairly thick receiver.The locking cable is robust and long enough to get wrapped around something The internal section slides into a groove which is beefed up with a metal piece. This is probably more secure than the hinge the way its set up. Personally I would like the inner metal piece to be larger thereby providing more support at the cable entrance. The metal is only on the bottom section, the top has no reinforcement at this point.Setting up a new combination is super simple. Once the case is open move the tab located on the loacks back to the "B" position, dial up the combo you want and then move the tab back to "A". lock the case BEFORE closing it to make sure y ou have the new combination working.Fit and finish is good. The silicone sections make getting a good hold of it easy but also tend to get scuffed up fairly quick.Adding a 5th dial for the combination would make me feel a little better about using it full time as a cash safe around the house, with the safety cable secured to something immovable of course.

I purchased this to take to Cuba because I found there safes a constant challenge. We locked to a firm pipe and it worked perfect

Junk. Cheap plastic junk. My 5 year old could pry this open in a second.

Absolute trash. Easily broken into, flimsy plastic case, exposed hinge pin. How van they call this thing a gun safe? It’s going back. Very disappointed.
