Once you get the included stand set up it's good to go, the light is very bright and is adjustable, it's small size makes it easy to pack away in a very nice case when not needed which makes it very portable. I could not even get the initial screen I was supposed to get on plugging the scope into my laptop. The instructions that came with scope were hard to understand written in what I call Chinese English! I visited the company website where 2 models of the scope were identified with 2 model numbers but the scope I received had no model indicators anywhere!? Tried both but to no avail. I emailed the company but they did not respond! There was an offer of a free stand upon request, I requested the stand it never arrived! Subsequently on realising that I have returned the scope for refund the seller emailed me stating they had not received my emails and offered a replacement, I did not take their offer!! **Q: Thinking of buying for grandson doing tree preservation. Is it strong enough to check soil samples?** A: I have not had any experience of studying soil samples, only botanical specimens, but what I can say is, the stand that comes with the "scope" is not stable enough to prevent "shake" when examining specimens. I would it. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Not perfect but it is great value for money! *by M***. on 8 June 2021* I bought this to look at mineral samples but have since discovered the amazing world of insects plants and wild stuff! I only use this with a windows 10 laptop so I cannot comment on use with a smart phone etc. Used with a laptop this it is an amazing little camera, simply plug in the USB and use windows own "Camera" app installed as standard on all windows 10. Capture photos and video very easily. My young grand children just loved it and we spent a couple of hours exploring the garden for things to look at. Much better than a conventional microscope as we could all see the activity on the full screen together. We were able to see tiny flies in detail, the wing structure of a butterfly, the mites attacking my cherry tree and two minute bugs living on a small daisy flower, just amazing! I did download the camera app suggested and though it worked there was no advantage that I could see over the windows app. There are a few minor gripes, the zoom and snap buttons don't work at all with the windows app at least, so we have to use focus ring and the stand supplied is very very flimsy, focusing with the focus ring is a bit tricky and frustrating as without a stable base it moves all over the place. I found I could improve this by sticking the stand to a heavy base with duct tape.( I used some granite coasters) This helped a lot. In spite of the gripes I do think this microscope shows amazing views of the micro world and just one afternoon with the grandlings was well worth the cost of the microscope.
