Satan's Little Helper

Jeff Lieberman's masterpiece
In most places I've looked, this is described as a horror comedy. This is too dark and twisted to be so. However, the irony is there. That makes it the scarier as the horror is definitely there. The writing is pretty tight and well rounded. Nothing is left hanging; no loose ends, no single story or visual element put there by chance and not made good use of. If the point was to make a comment on identity and perception through holidays and costumes, it works for me. Some would say that the hero literally coming back to life to save the day maybe too implausible, but to me is just taking the formula from the most conventional horror movies aimed at teenagers and going above and beyond with it... and this is definitely not suited for boys and girls! It's a cautionary tale, like most horror flicks are, that manages to be much more in strictly sticking with the format. In any case, you can always count on Jeff Lieberman, the man behind such outlandish and never short of original masterpieces such as Blue Sunshine and Just Before Dawn, for something that's never been seen before. I now understand the line "we'll never know if monsters are children or if children are monsters" by Lucio Fulci. The kid here is one sick puppy and it's no wonder why he "bonds" so well with the villain. Even though he is basically taken for a ride through Hell, in which by the way nobody is aware they are, I now see why they say horror movies with children are the scariest. Almost the fact alone that Amanda Plummer is in any movie is a guarantee that it at least should be interesting. She is her usual singular, talented and trooper self in this one as in anything in her repertoire. The particular way Lieberman conveys the disappearance of a whole town's police department through "Quasimodo," instead of "going into detail," is nothing short of genius, in all honesty! I place this as my new favorite film set on Halloween. Lieberman, from what I understand, had not done a movie for a long while before this. It's typical for the audiences of cult directors to act disappointed with their "comebacks." If you put aside the "name value" and the hype, which is to me the main driving force in ratings, you may be in for a surprise. A carnage carnival that is sure to satisfy if you manage to get rid of those kinds of expectations! Lieberman and David Schmoeller have to be the most underrated horror directors ever.

Entertainment for the Whole Family
There are many films that you could choose this weekend; "Magic of Belle Island," a movie that I reviewed a while back in which I gave a mild thumbs down. "A Dolphin Tale," another Morgan Freeman vehicle that I highly recommended, as it will bring tears to everyone's eyes and warmth to their hearts. But I'm going to assert right here and right now: any film that you choose surely won't be as family-friendly as "Satan's Little Helper."Sure, it's got a little nudity. One guy's mistress is shown naked in the shower as he's having an affair. And it shows a young gal, who's influenced by her mom to dress seductively, even though the daughter's very young and in an even younger relationship with a guy she hardly knows. But you can forgive a heart-warming story such as this for a few minor indiscretions. After all, this film has its "teachable moments" as well, moments that you might nod your head at and say, "I need to remember some of the little life lessons from this film! Ah, if they'd only taught me some of this stuff in school!"For example, this film shows the danger of rifling through someone's medicine cabinet and taking prescriptions that were written for someone else. It also demonstrates that, say if you're a clerk in a grocery store, the dangers of confronting a shoplifter by yourself afterwards outside the store. You also will learn that adding poisons, such as Drano, to punch is not the best idea in the world. Oh, the "teachable moments" go on and on and on.But perhaps the most important lesson that we learn from this film: you really need to be careful when you pick your friends. It's dangerous to hang out with people who use drugs for sure; we all know that. But most people don't know that it's REALLY a bad idea to make friends with a serial killer. He may take you down a dark and scary path; he might even drag you down to hell. Or he'll at least take you down to the cellar in your house, a place that can be very dangerous and scary.I was surprised that no critics seemed to review this fine family film, and I was doubly surprised that only 36 percent of the viewing public liked it. Geez, I would have figured it'd be much higher than that. After all, the movie's really funny, surely funnier than this light-hearted-and-tongue-in-cheek review. I'd say "Satan's Little Helper" is entertainment for the whole family. After all, you'll learn a lot of life lessons while watching, just like I did.

Pretend killing.
I remember watching this film at like 10 years old and I didn't like it yet it's always stuck in my head so 10 years later I buy it. Love it in a sick way. Moral of the story not everything in pretend.

Really Enjoyable :)
I bought this movie on a whim. Really glad I did. It's not a typical 'Halloween' scarefest. It's not a slasher movie as such. It's not got a deep plot. It's just very well done. Good acting, a few kills and......a few laughs. This little cracker of a movie is worth getting for Katheryn Winnick alone! Wow! Overall, for a low budget movie.....First Class! Well worth a watch. Glad to have it in my collection.
