Small rod, big sparks
I added a highly reflective lanyard with a strip duct tape, about 1/2" wide. I'm sure you know that duct tape is an excellent fire starter. I made cuts in the end of the duct tape about 1'2" long so it could easily be torn into narrow strips for a bird's nest that will catch a spark. This keeps things together and adds purchase to the rod and small ceramic striker. Together, this weighs 0.4 oz or 10 grams.

Absolute joke for packaging
The rods are as advertised. Easy to get the coating off and begin striking. They work just fine. The bag they came in was falling apart and so was the bag that bag was in. Thankfully the Amazon envelope was strong enough to keep them together.

Just right for what we needed
These were perfect for a Valentine's gift we made for our nature school kids. We put together a little survival pouch to attach to their backpacks that included these, some fire starting materials, a mini knot tying booklet and some Paracord. We had to put together close to 60 pouches so the cost was just right. They are a great size to always have in your backpack or first aid kit and work with any metal knife blade. It takes a couple strikes to get the top coat of black off but then they easily make sparks.

These are great for an easy to carry backup.
These small ferro rods are easily packed or carried in a wallet. I got them to fit in a DPx knife handle that has a hidden space. The rods are small, but used wisely will last a bunch of fires. Don't plan on these being a primary ignition source, but they are handy and they work.

Small enough to tuck in anywhere
Not my mainline service sparking choice but THESE can be secured without noticing on keychains, knife sheaths, and zipper-pulls for those "just in case" moments. On a knife sheath I like to encase these tiny fero-rods in a rubber or plastic tube, folded and tied closed before securing on an exposed sheath. I make a point to, after returning home from an outdoors adventure, re-paint all Ferro-rods with clear fingernail polish. **The Whole Point ** of a ferro-cerium rod is that it is extremely reactive. Water, especially salty water, sweat, and oils from your skin will degrade these most reactive tools. When you need one -- you NEED one. Make certain it it usable -- just in case.
