Berlin Street Style: A Guide to Urban Chic

A fun perspective with sartorial bite!
Not all of the Street Style books are as good as this one! Berlin and Paris are my two favorites-if you’re in search of a fresh perspective and a tongue in cheek romp through fascinating fashion cities- you’ll adore Berlin Street Style!

Nice little book for anyone in love with Berlin
Nice little book for anyone in love with Berlin. I was expecting it to be set up more like the Paris Street Style book, where they have so many little pieces on local artists, but was still happy overall with it.

Don't buy this one
If you loved Paris Street Style, don't buy this one. I should have listened to the reviewers. I bought a used copy, so it isn't worth returning. Very few pictures of people in clothing, as others have said. Lots of pages of fashion advice and where to shop. Not at all like the other books of the series!

I felt like someone was telling me "wear a hat
The only think of any use here were the used clothing/vintage store guides. I felt like someone was telling me "wear a hat, wait, don't wear a hat!" like some woman who thinks that because she likes clothing she can tell people how to dress. This "style guide" has nothing to do with Berlin per-se, it's supposed to be a "what not to wear" when we all know that anything goes in Berlin anyway. If you really want to dress like a Berliner then check out some street blogs. If you're desperate for a guide on shopping, then this *may* work for you, but again some Google-fu might server you better (and save some Euros)

Style books are usually good for inspiration
Style books are usually good for inspiration. I like books of “street” fashion in particular because I like the creativity and variety displayed by people who aren’t necessarily trying to sell you something. And I like seeing regional styles. What are the kids in Japan wearing? Or the punks in London or the folks in New York? Unfortunately, this is not that kind of book. If one’s understanding of fashion and style in Berlin relied on this book, one couldn’t help but conclude that the women of Berlin are snotty, opinionated, and pretentious. This book is also definitely trying to sell stuff. Lots of stuff. Along with all the ads for “6 Handbags you NEED to own”, it’s annoyingly full of pronouncements such as, “The Berlin woman never wears brightly colored socks.” “The Berlin woman would never get plastic surgery.” (Helps of course if you’re a young model,) and if you go to a “hip neighborhood” you should “take notes.” I know the New Germany is getting richer and richer, nevertheless this book illustrates why, when it comes to fashion, the world still does not look to Germany.

A very stupid book
Within the 235 pages of this book, there are 15 pictures of people in clothes. Two of those are of the authors. Maybe I'm misunderstanding the concept of 'street style', but I thought it was pictures of people, on the street, wearing their clothes? What this book is, essentially, is a travel guide - there are pages and pages of shop listings (some of them clothes shops, many not), plus hotel and restaurant recommendations etc, and then thrown in for good measure, some extraordinarily patronising style and beauty advice, pegged on to the premise of 'the Berlin woman always...' or 'the Berlin woman never...'. Some (paraphrased) examples: get plenty of sleep; drink lots of water [this appears more than once]; watch your weight, but don't count calories as that's boring and unattractive; never wear red lipstick if you're over 30; never wear sleeveless tops unless your arms are really toned (a la Michelle Obama), but not TOO toned (Madonna)... on and on it goes.Much of the 'advice' is very specific to the author, a 50-something book editor who claims that most of Berlin is self-employed in the creative professions.Bottom line, this book is very much NOT an overview of Berlin street style, which is disappointing.

written by a true style nazi, sadly.
If you have no idea what you're doing style wise, but would love to be told, this is the right book for you. Living in Berlin for 3 months a year, this is in no way true to what makes women in Berlin special. This could be most north european cities. Honestly, it reeks of frigid and boring style advise, by a woman most Berlin women would never take advise from. Boring book, but with a good shop guide, for the wealthy.

Tourist guide book
Great Berlin boutique guide book. But definitely it is not a theoretical book. Would not recommend if you want to get a feel of Berlin's street style.

¡Genial!
