Inspirational exploration of “memory work” in post Holocaust Europe.
The author presents many essential insights into the ways in which Europe and the West have dealt with the legacy of National Socialism and the Holocaust. Her perspectives benefit from her examination of her Franco Germanic family histories and from her trans national education providing the reader with clear insights into how Germany, France, Italy and Britain have dealt with their recent past, or not.

Excellent book with very detailed account of how war affects ordinary people and a very good explanation of how we need to own our involvement in the actions taken by our government. Well written and an extremely enlightening read!

One of the best books ...
... on Germany I have ever read! Excellently researched, balanced, shedding a light into every nook and cranny of German - and at that: French - history, by being gripping like pageturner throughout. That is something few textbooks I've read have achieved. Geraldine Schwartz is very obviously a historian of the most discerning and accurate kind. I can but take my hat off to her for coming up with such a brilliant study. What an achievement!
