Yamaha Recorder Student (Yamaha Individual Instruction)

Easy Lessons, Familiar tunes.
Music is easy to learn for a beginner as it introduces a limited number of notes and only one sharp and one flat. The tunes are easy to sing and memorize. I like the factthat the back of the book has a fingering chart, but it is a little complicated to follow for a beginner.

Great for learning
I've used Yamaha books to learn to play instruments since I was young. They have always been pretty easy to use. My 11 year old has taken quickly to it. My 9 and 6 year olds are able to pick it up, with guidance.

Useful book for a group
I am using this book with a group of 8 kids, 9-11 years old. It has a good variety of music, and it introduces concepts pretty well though it's a bit weak on reinforcing theory (since it says "student" book, maybe there's an "instructor" book with more of that in it). It's not as good as some others I've seen for self-study but excellent for a teacher to use with a group.

We're all Beginners at some point!
I remember buying the Yamaha Student books when I was a kid and seeing all the same songs! This time I'm trying recorder because it's more compact/portable than other wind instruments I've played. Yay!This book explains how to read music then step by step introduces new notes while showing their fingerings. Tempo changes, refrains and other natations are added as the student progresses. It also adds duets and trios.SongsMerrily We Roll Along; Hot Cross Buns; Sailing; Au clair de la lune; Go Tell Aunt Rhody; Lightly Row; Aura Lee; Jingle Bells; Barcarolle; Good King Wenceslas; Rockin' Time; Love Somebody; Shortnin' Bread; Rockin' the Blues; Jolly Old Saint Nicholas; Red River Valley; When the Saints Go Marching In; This Old Man; Good Night, Ladies; Bugle Call; O Come, All Ye Faithful; Michael, Row the Boat Ashore; We Wish You a Merry Christmas; Largo; The Streets of Laredo; Ode to Joy; Oh, Susanna; Bridal Chorus; Mexican Hat Dance; Frere Jacques; Volga Boat Song; Skip to my Lou; Molly Malone; Lovely Evening; Old MacDonald; Lullaby; Can Can; Let's Row Again; Auld Lang Syne; All Through the Night; Down in the Valley; The Bridge of Avignon; Did You Ever See a Lassie?; For He's a Jolly Good Fellow; Lavender's Blues; Our Boys Will Shine Tonight; Alma Mater; Scarborough Fair

Good all around book
I use this book for any age student. My adult students are very happy with it as it is not too juvenile and "kiddie". The recorder is a wonderful classical instrument and lends it's self to multi player ie ,soprano, alto, tenor, and bass groups.

Solid teaching tool
A very good recorder method with catchy tunes. Students find it easy to follow. The second parts make learning more interesting when beginners are paired with advanced students.

Nothing to do with recorder
If you want a book to teach you some very basic music theory, and have some pieces that fit into the recorders range. Then this is the book for you.If however, you are interested in recorder technique, do not buy this book. This book is clearly not written by someone who knows how recorder works, or which notes are easiest to play first. No wonder the standard of recorder playing that comes out of school students is so ghastly.
