What lubricant do you recommend for the lead screw?

The ball screw has a load capacity far greater than the NEMA 17 Stepper motor can generate, the ball screw should last a very long time. Mine came with a very light coating of oil. Any light lubricating oil (not WD-40, it is not a lubricant) should be adequate (like 3 in one). It can be wiped on the ball screw and the ball nut / carriage run back and forth to transfer onto the balls in the ball nut. It does not have to be dripping or soaked in oil. It is not necessary and it is messy. A light grease could be used (white lithium grease for example) but I would wipe most of it off so it isn't a mess and attracting dust.

Your photos and date seem to indicate that 31mm and 47mm stepper motor mounting bolt patterns will work. can i mount a nema23 stepper to this product?

You can mount a NEMA 23 stepper motor, the mounting plate is compatible with both NEMA 17 and NEMA 23 stepper motors
