Great size ant farm
I love the size - I got two and connected them. The kids love watching the daily changes. I have one sand and one gel so that we can compare and contrast and discuss what the ants like and don't like. This is my second year to have these in my classroom and none of the ants seem to really like the gel. This is great to teach and talk about, but if you are only getting one then I would go with the sand.

Not a good product
Not a good product, super tiny and not made well, the gel is so low the ants can’t climb into the tubes so we added some more gel to build it up but once the ants were a me to get into the tubes and climb to the bottom of the they then couldn’t get back up and died

Not for small ants! Not for long term keeping either
This is a cute little set up. However there's no sponge for the water feeder part so ants can drown. Plus no moisture chamber for the queen to lay eggs. On top of that, you'll need large ants. Don't be like me and put ants in that aren't the big variety and watch it crawl right out of the air hole. Luckily it was just a scout and not the whole colony so I was able to put it back in the other formicarium easy enough. Also it says you can stack them... But without drilling it I don't see how that's possible. It does come with this felt pad to grow the seeds they provided to look cute... But ants have no way to access that so it's pointless and not viable for long term growth with no soil or nutrients. Another thing, the feel level is far below the tubes that enter it so they would have to climb quite a bit to go in and out. Might be good for a quick classroom or home project but not long term ant keeping. And be sure they are BIG ants.

Wonderful first ant habitat
Wonderful little habitat. I added a small strip of LED lights around the back, and it lit up beautifully.

Do not recommend
Update: I posted a picture after having it operational for a little over a month. You can see all the condensation in there that is not able to be cleaned out without releasing the ants, as well as how little they've actually dug any tunnels. They all typically stay huddled in a corner. They piled up the gel where the water and sugar/food are supposed to go, so it's practically impossible to give them more. I feel like I'm slowly starving them to death. I am completely dissatisfied with this product, and I would change it to 1 star if my child wasn't at least still enjoying the ants. Original: We bought this for my 3rd child, as each of my kids has had one around K/1st grade. There are no instructions besides the diagram in the product photos. The sheet of paper that comes with the kit references the buyer back to the Amazon page to watch an instruction video, yet there's no real instruction video, just the product promo. It came with what I assume is a pack of food, but I don't see that even listed. The ants have a hard time climbing the tube. There is condensation building up in the gel area. The tiny sheet of paper that came with the kit said to add food and water, so maybe the extra moisture is causing that? Either way, I do not recommend this kit. If I could somehow transfer the ants to a different one, I would. Two stars only because my child is enjoying watching the ants. ~~~~~~~~~ ETA: the seller contacted me and said that the packet is actually seeds not food. That makes sense why 1) they weren't eating it and 2) the seeds are sprouting. But that was not clear to me from just looking at the pictures. An actual video like promised or better instructions would've taken care of much of my frustration. The seller also said that the condensation can be wiped, but as it's in the digging area, there is no way to wipe that without releasing the ants. I stand by my 2 star review.
