It isn't over-engineered--the height adjustments are made simply by changing the position of hanging pegs on the footbed. The felt fabric keeps my feet from slipping off. Hopefully, it will last--it appears to be a better value for the money compared to other plastic versions.

It's a nice and sturdy foot rest, but the angle makes it more likely that I keep my feet closer to the edge instead of fully supported. I also find the felt material to be difficult to clean, and would have preferred a textured nonporous surface.
