Review: If I had the power, I would compel every student entering the counseling field to buy a copy of Marketing for the Mental Health Professional, by David P. Diana. It would be for their own good. They would all thank me someday. Think I think a lot of myself? (Well, that's a separate issue...) Really, I just have that much confidence in the power of this book. Many of you already know that I know David through other sources. We met when he requested to add the BeginningCounselor link to his website. More recently, he chose to profile me for his most recent "Not Most People" list. This could, obviously, make me a little biased. I admit that. But what I want you to know was that I had this book in my desertcart.com shopping cart before I met David. As I started talking to him, I only wanted to buy it more. Because I was transitioning between jobs then, I hesitated. A month or two went by. But then I started my new business, Beginnings Counseling & Consulting ([...]), and I knew I needed this resource to start off on the right foot. I was right. Now that I have the book, I cannot believe I waited this long to read it. It is exactly what I needed starting out on my own practice. David gets his audience - after all, he is one of us. He encourages us to use our own strengths in sharing what we have to offer potential clients, as well as potential employers or partners. "Marketing" is an icky word to many therapists. It shouldn't be. There is such a thing as relationship marketing, and David shares how to do it. His concepts are super simple to grasp, but not anything people have done before. It's a lifestyle of marketing, not a few tips to sell ads. In fact, he moves away from traditional advertising, which many agree anyway is a "done" medium. (Seth Godin, and more recently, social media coach Beth J. Hayden call it "interruption marketing" and they're right. I ignore this kind of marketing. Don't you?) David helps you define for yourself how you're going to do what you do. Finally, a way to market that doesn't make me feel dirty. It's an incredible source of inspiration when you're starting out, or when you're ready to reinvent the way you've been doing things. David encourages you to hold out for your best self and your best product. And don't think it's just for independent practitioners, either. He also has a large section on interviewing with potential employers, too. I know it works, because if you ever talk to him, you see he lives the plan he writes about. He genuinely believes in it. And he has been experiencing phenomenal success as a result: Check out this info on his new business: David Diana is a business coach, marketing consultant, and licensed professional counselor who has teamed up with his graphic designer wife, Nicole. I have read several books and reviewed many resources over the past few years as I started and continue to build my private practice - David Diana's book is easily one of the most helpful and impactful resources I have read. I appreciate the fact that this reads very simply like a blueprint for success. David discusses the background and theory supporting his direction, but most importantly he lays out a plan of action, and shares successful examples for the key concepts in having a successful practice. This is a great resource for anyone getting started, or just thinking about beginning in private practice; but also a valuable guide for those practitioners who are looking to revitalize their business. -Daniel A. David's book provides an easy to read guide for recent graduates as well as established professionals. He gets down to the nuts and bolts of why marketing has changed and how to adapt to that change. He points to the internet and the conversations of world wide communities as a fact of life. Then he goes on to say how to thrive in the those communities as a mental health professional. I am using his book as a resource to help me as I start up my practice. Since reading David's book, I found my voice and the courage to join in the many converations of the mental health community around the globe. His advice is invaluable. A must read.
