Are these meant for coconut macaroons (with two 'o's) or French macarons (one 'o')?

I purchased it for the french macarons, but I have been using it for any cookies,scones and yes macaroons ! Wait until they have cooled and they will come off easily.

Can you place this directly onto the oven shelf or must you place it on top of a cookie sheet?

I've only used them on a cookie sheet, but I would imagine that you could put them directly on the oven grate, though you wouldn't have as much structure as a pan when pulling it out of the oven.

What is the diameter of the circles on the silpat?

The larger circle is 2.5"... the smaller one is 1.5". You didn't ask, but this product and a scoop will make a big difference in your cookies.
