High-Speed Performance with Notable Reliability Concerns
I recently purchased the SanDisk Professional 4TB PRO-G40 SSD, enticed by its impressive specifications and rugged design. Initially, the drive delivered exceptional performance, boasting read speeds up to 3000MB/s and write speeds up to 2500MB/s when connected via Thunderbolt 3 . The aluminum core and IP68 rating for dust and water resistance gave me confidence in its durability, making it suitable for on-the-go professionals. However, after a few weeks of use, I encountered several reliability issues. The drive began to intermittently disconnect, requiring multiple reconnections before it would appear in Finder on my MacBook Pro. Additionally, I experienced problems with Spotlight indexing and occasional system freezes upon ejecting the drive . Despite these challenges, the drive's speed and ruggedness remain appealing. If you're considering this SSD, be aware of potential compatibility and reliability issues, especially with macOS systems. It's advisable to ensure your system's USB-C ports provide sufficient power and to use high-quality cables to minimize connection problems.

High speed in a small package
I added this SSD to my M4 Mac mini to give it some extra storage space for LLMs and photos. I love the small size of this drive as well as the super high transfer speed of Thunderbolt. It's a great combo that's good for video or photo editing, data backups, or just general storage. My Mac recognized this out of the box, so I didn't even need to format it. If you're looking for some extra space and your computer supports Thunderbolt, take a look at this drive.

DO NOT BUY: Constantly loses connection, no customer support
I bought this to use as a backup for my computer, as well as for music production. The thing is great when it works - it’s hella fast, and so freaking tiny. Unfortunately, the device is constantly, spontaneously “improperly ejected” from my computer. I get constant notifications/warnings. I’m using the provided cable. It should just work. It’s less than a month old. I reached out to customer support a week ago and haven’t heard anything yet - not even a “thanks for reaching out” email. It might be worth it to check out their competition. This thing is too expensive for this kind of performance and (lack of) customer service, and you’re probably buying this because you need something reliable that actually does the thing it says it should do. Update: It’s been two months and I still am having constant issues with the drive spontaneously disconnecting. I still have not heard back from customer service after reaching out to the emails provided on their website. I also just wanted to say that I’ve had the overheating issues others have mentioned when it does work. Sometimes it seems to decide to just stop working because it gets so hot (which is yet another way I lose work thanks to this thing). I’m so upset that I spent so much money on this and have lost hours/days of work because of the problems this thing has. I’m in the process of trying to jerry-rig a solution - I just spent ~$50 on different kinds of tapes and cables to try to see if that will solve the problems. I cannot caution against this thing enough. Save yourself the headaches and heartaches of losing valuable data and go with the Samsung version. It may cost more up front, but you’ll be saving yourself in more ways than you know. Update 4 months later: Still no word from “customer support”. None of the cables (or tape) I purchased to try instead of the included one solves the issue, which is how I know without a shadow of doubt it’s an issue with this joke of a product and not my computer. This has been the worst purchase I’ve made in probably a decade. I’m going to end up buying the Samsung one, so I’m just out $400 because I made the mistake of not purchasing this with a credit card that might have offered more purchase protection. I still cannot caution against this thing enough. Do not make my mistake. Spend your hard-earned money on something that’s actually worth what you’re spending. Update 1.5years later: Just wanted to come back and state again how much I hate this hard drive after looking at other hard drives again and getting super sad and annoyed that I ever bought this one to begin with. It remains probably the worst purchase I've made for as long as I can remember. Please do not make the same mistake me and others made. It's not a cheap one to make. I literally will never purchase another sandisk product again because of this experience.

Outstanding Performance and Portability for Web and Graphics Design
I've been using the SanDisk Professional 4TB PRO-G40 SSD for my web and graphics design projects, and it's been an absolute game-changer. With blazing-fast speeds of up to 3000MB/s, this SSD significantly reduces load times and allows me to work seamlessly with large files, whether I'm editing high-resolution images or managing complex web design projects. The Thunderbolt 3 interface with 40Gbps speeds is perfect for my primary workstation, ensuring that I get the maximum performance out of this drive. The USB-C compatibility is a fantastic addition, allowing me to connect to a variety of devices, which is incredibly useful when I'm moving between different workstations. One of the standout features for me is the ruggedness of this SSD. The IP68 dust and water resistance give me peace of mind, knowing that my work is protected no matter where I am. This drive is built to withstand the rigors of travel and everyday use, which is essential for a professional on the go. What I love most about the SanDisk PRO-G40 is its portability. The compact and durable design makes it easy to carry, and with 4TB of storage, I have plenty of space for all my projects. This means I can effortlessly take my entire work portfolio with me, whether I'm at my home office, a client's location, or a coffee shop. In summary, the SanDisk Professional 4TB PRO-G40 SSD is an excellent investment for anyone in web or graphics design. It offers unparalleled speed, reliability, and portability, making it the perfect tool to take your work wherever you need to be. Highly recommended!

Runs PERFECT as an external Windows OS drive.
I’ve been using this SanDisk NVMe in a Thunderbolt 4/USB4 enclosure as my external Windows 11 OS drive, and it’s been absolutely flawless. The build quality is excellent — the rubberized casing feels premium and offers great durability, while the metal inside keeps the drive cool under heavy use. Performance is essentially identical to an internal NVMe. I’m seeing lightning-fast boot times, near-instant app launches, and very responsive file transfers. Even when running resource-intensive programs, it performs just like an internal WD Black NVMe would. Setting it up as a bootable OS drive was straightforward using AnyBurn, and it integrates perfectly with my motherboard’s Thunderbolt boot. Windows recognizes it as NVMe, not USB, which means I get full NVMe speed and functionality, including TRIM and SMART monitoring. If you’re looking for a high-performance, reliable external NVMe drive — whether for storage or even as a bootable OS drive — this is one of the best options on the market. Durable, fast, and totally professional-grade.

Running strong & cool for 15 months.
I got this 15 months ago already, it's perfect on my iMac M1 and also latest Mac Mini 4 Pro. TRUE Thunderbolt device. Fast enough by far to use for Lightroom Catalog location as well as 36mp Nikon Raw files. LR cranks through them and are rendered 1:1 almost as fast as if they were 1:1 Previews which I no longer do now. I don't know what people are doing that they say 'it gets hot' - was never a concern for me. YES the cable works almost all the time but YES as they say there's something about the shorty that will drop and disconnect. You don't see it unmounted but will get a notification saying 'Drive was disconnected' etc. A little annoying given the cost but almost never an issue. A lot less now with the Mini Pro 4 than the M1 iMac. Maybe a stronger current, IDK. *FYI it's a higher cost now than in July 2024, for whatever reason IDK. I wish the bottom didn't have little bare metal sinks - I'm afraid it will scratch my Mini's metal. Otherwise, it's perfect.

Make sure you have another additional backup!
Make sure you have another backup besides this one! I got this one a few months ago and it works great! Plenty fast for using on my MacBook Pro for use with Logic Pro and Final Cut Pro but a few days ago, it just died. Never dropped or it got it wet. Just stopped working. Waiting on the warranty replacement now from SanDisk. All my stuff on it was lost. We’ll see how long the replacement works before any issues. You need to have a secondary backup, just in case.

DO NOT BUY THIS DRIVE (unless you wanna spend another couple grand in repairing it)
I’m absolutely fuming over this drive right now. About a year ago, I bought this drive because I needed a good SSD that would be able to fit about 4 TB worth of footage, photos, and project files (I run a podcast and do miscellaneous video work as a creator and freelancer). The drive worked great initially and has always had pretty fast transfer speeds, which I thought was awesome, seeing as I’m usually transferring large files to and from it. Over the past year though, I had noticed that, occasionally, this drive would be unrecognizable in my computer when I’d plug it in. Typically, this was an easy fix and I’d just take it out and plug it back in (which would fix it), then go about my day. About a week ago, the drive suddenly stopped being recognizable at all, even after plugging it into multiple devices of mine. I didn’t know what to do, so I sent it to a data recovery center, where they said that there was some degrading on the drive, and the lowest tier to recover almost 4 TB of footage, data, etc. was $2100… I looked up other reviews on Reddit for people who have the same drive and it seems as though this is a common problem for anyone who owns the drive. SanDisk has a warranty policy, but that policy only covers replacing the drive, not recovering the massive amounts of files and data on the drive, which are seemingly gone forever if you’re unable to pay for recovery and don’t have the footage stored anywhere else. So please, for the love of God, do NOT purchase this drive. SanDisk, if you’re reading this, PLEASE fix your SSD drives. Consumers should not have to pay around $400 just to pay another $1-2k down the road to repair this thing.
