I can't get the bit out. I assume it is supposed to be held in magnetically or is the little black collet a release mechanisim?

Yes there is a release collar.hold the hexagon end in your left hand and with your thumb push the black plastic collar on the holder up. Pull the bit out.its as easy as that .we have all done it.
