How can I stop white bits growing in base and keep it clean when not in use ? Is it safe to use like this ?

Aluminum oxidizes when it's in contact with water for long period of time. If you want your moka express to look like new for a very long time, after each use clean it with tap water and immediately dry all parts with towel. Leaving moka pot wet to self-dry will cause aluminium to oxidize, leaving ugly stains. Fortunately, it is safe to use it with those and they won't affect your health or coffee taste

What coffee do I need to buy with this? Espresso?

A medium fine grind, not espresso grind which is too fine (apparently) for a moka pot, i would suggest checking out the side of the bag as it would list which method the coffee should be used for :) btw this 1 cup pot produces a shot of coffee, so don’t be surprised at the quantity if you are used too drinking a double espresso amount.

No, it will not be picked up the induction hobs.

How big is the basket?

It's the official 1 cup size that takes approximately 2 teaspoons of coffee. It's an excellent coffee maker, the best you can buy anywhere. Be sure to order a couple of replacement rings or gaskets as they are sometimes called, for the upper part of the coffee maker, as they wear out after about 300 cups of coffee.
