Absolutely superb product. Packed full of features.
These smoke alarms are excellent - everything about them screams quality - from the moment the box arrives at the door. You can tell that this is a premium product. Setup is easy, download the app and pair it with your WiFi then stick it on the ceiling. Buy more than one of these and they speak to each other as well as your WiFi/iPhone. New generation Nest Protect will detect smoke and Carbon Monoxide. These look great on the ceiling in any house. Pros + Cons + Premium Look & Feel + Ridiculously Easy Setup + Will alert you of any activations even if you are not home + They speak to you in a real voice rather than just beep + Early warning means they will give you a polite warning before full activation to allow you to open the windows and get the pancake smoke out + They speak to you and say where the smoke/CO has been detected so you know where the potential fire is + They flash green when you turn the lights off at night to let you know they are working properly + Night light function that lights the room up when you walk under them (or on all night if you want on the mains version) + Excellent App + Monthly status email advising how many activations + IFTTT (If This Then That) integration so if these go off, you can program to automatically shut the boiler down if it's a CO alarm - potential life saver. Even if you don't have the Nest thermostat (Mine is Honeywell Evohome) + 10 year sensor Cons: - None. This is absolutely the 'Next Generation' of smoke alarm. You don't need the Nest thermostat for these so if need a new smoke alarm, this is the one to go for. Yes they are pricey, but you can't put a price on a product like this in my opinion.

Perfect replacement for aging basic units that are due for replacement
This device is perfect for what it's designed to do. It's helpful in itself, and the accompanying software from Nest for your phone or PC works just as well. It's a nicely designed unit, substantail feeling with a great build quality. Installation is a doddle, providing you've already got the mains connection available for it to use. Pull out the piece of plastic preventing the batteries from connecting to the unit to power it on (do this BEFORE installation to the mains), and run through the setup process (the reason you do this before mounting to the ceiling is that there's a QR code on the back that you need to scan with the mobile app in order to register the device as yours on your account). Voice prompts go through a test routine, and then it instructs you to complete installation. My old detector had 3 wires connected to it - Live, Neutral and Interconnect. Nest Protect doesn't use the interconnection wire as it's all done wirelessly, so that can be cut back and insulated. Simply screw the backplate to the ceiling or wall, use the provided connector blocks (which are also great quality) to make the relevant connections for the provided wiring harness to Live and Neutral. Plug the harness into the device and clip the device to the ceiling. That's it! As far as day to day use goes...it's just a smoke/CO detector. But so much more advanced than the cheaper tat you can buy. It self-tests several times a day, and when you switch the lights off the ring glows green to let you know everything's OK. It'll also activate a white ring which is a "pathlight" so you can find your way around in the dark. This replaced one of my old mains based smoke alarms, and I'll shortly be buying another to replace the second one. All in all, highly recommended.

Highly recommended for the gadget lover!
Well, where to begin... Is this a lot of money? sure, but is it worth it? that may depend on whether you have a love of gadgets or not! On the face of it this is an expensive smoke and CO detector, but to someone who owns more than one Nest product or someone who is looking for a "connected home" this is just what your after. It is well built and very simple to set up. I am an electrician and installed the 230V version with absolute ease, The instructions are very clear and concise and the Protect is set up before it goes up onto the ceiling. It is set up by downloading the Nest app which serves as the place you can deal with all you rNest products if you have more than one. From there you make an account and add the product by scanning the QR code on the back of it. You then run through some quick settings and your done! I like the pathway feature which can illuminate when you walk under it or can stay illuminated the whole time it is dark. I was hoping to have this replace leaving a light on, however its not bright enough for my liking, so a nice feature but for me it could have been brighter. If you have the Nest thermostat it also has a feature where if the Nest Protect detects CO the Thermostat will shut off the boiler. Again nice little touches. I also like the touch that you can connect it to Phillips Hue bulbs, so you could for example have them flash red upon an alert or come on at full brightness to light your path. Overall, yes its expensive but its well tied in to other Nest products and other things like Phillips Hue and it has a CO and smoke detector built in. I'd say its worth the money for the gadget loving homeowner.
