One of their best
A few years ago, like many rock fans, I'd given up on Brian Johnson era AC/DC. Albums like Fly On The Wall, Ballbreaker, Stiff Upper Lip were all huge disappointments, and Back In Black was about the only album worth having. However, I recently bought the whole catalogue, and was pleasantly surprised by a few albums - notably, Blow Up Your Video, Flick Of The Switch, and in particular The Razors Edge. This is definately one of AC/DC's most fun albums, and has some genuine classics that still hold up today. It starts with 'Thunderstruck' - one of the best ever opening riffs to any rock song. A true classic, and one of the best songs they've ever done.Momentum keeps going with 'Fire Your Guns', a really catchy groove similar to 'Shoot to Thrill' from the Back In Black album, and 'Moneytalks', a Shook Me All Night Long style song, which is slightly cheesy, but so addictive you can't help but like it.Then a big change of pace. The title song of the album is a very dark, moody and heavy song, reminiscent of Hells Bells. It is a surprise on this album, but it is still a fantastic song. After that a bit of a lull - 'Mistress For Christmas' is pretty woeful, even by AC/DC's sleazy standards. 'Rock Your Heart Out' is OK, but not memorable. Then another cracker - 'Are You Ready'. A catchy, bluesy riff, a big chorus - simple formula, but a result. The rest of the album is up and down. 'Got You By The Balls' is pretty tedious, 'Shot Of Love' has a catchy groove, and swings along nicely, 'Let's Make It' is a cracking song, similar to 'Are You Ready' but no worse for it. The last 2 songs - ' Goodbye and Good Riddance..' is poor, and not worth much time, 'If You Dare' is OK, but not a classic to end an album on.Overall, this album is patchy, (at least 4 songs can be ignored), and is nowhere near as consistent as their very best albums. But, in terms of big hits, it stands up with the best of them, and the first half of the album is as strong as any they've done. The essential, post-Black In Black, album to add to your AC/DC collection.
