Sounds of the Eternal: A Celtic Psalter

This is a wonderful unique prayer book a classic very old book at that it has great prayers and things to meditate on absolutely something to have if you were into this type of stuff

This psalter has become my companion each morning these past months of summer as I pray and get ready for the day. I love to work in my garden, so this morning I prayed the Thursday morning prayer and started to hum the accompanying chant from the CD. I spent an hour working in my yard, praying the chant (all of the chants are directly from scripture) and hearing the beautiful simplicity in my head. I drove my teen to an event, and on the way back, I listened to the CD in the car. This book and CD have blessed me at a time when I have needed careful discernment. Most excellent work. I've ordered another book by Newell and accompanying CD as well as the chant/chord book for use in my church. If you like Taize and Iona, you will love this, too.

This is a beautiful book that captures for me every day the simplicity of praying to God. A few words on each page and yet a wealth of wisdom and love.

JPNewell's images in words are a delight to drink in. I linger and re-read the prayers which nourish and sustain my understanding of our human relationship to our ever-living, loving Creator. I want to gift some special friends with their own copy.

This book is just what I was looking for: some simple prayers written by John Philip Newell and short passages from the Bible (including Old and New Testament and the book of Wisdom). For each day of the week there is a short selection of Morning prayers and Evening prayers. It only takes about 5 minutes to slowly read through each selection and puts one in a contemplative mood. It brings together the eternal with the everyday to enrich our spiritual prayer lives.

I've probably read all Newell's book but this one travels with me no matter where I go. It's so easy to pick it up for morning or evening prayer and find something to inspire and deepen prayer. I purchased a number of copies of this for Christmas gifts and the recipients seem to like it as well.

Don't know of a parallel. Initially given to us by a retired pastor friend to read, we quickly ordered a copy for our home. Interestingly my wife takes it to read to her mother in assisted living, who, in turn, treasures its spiritual wisdom. A good book to take along on trips, just to carry with when you want something to reflect on - steep yourself in when otherwise stuck in the (essentially vacuous) world.

There are many devotionals but few that have the lasting quality of Newell's "Sounds of the Eternal." This is the third copy I have purchased because of either giving them away or wanting it in both hard copy and in Kindle. I like the inclusive format and his view of a God that is in nature and full of compassion.

Lovely to use as there's a morning and evening set of material for all days of the week. Joyful and tender hearted prayers to follow
