It probably uses ethanol (alcohol) that's been dyed red. This also expands and contracts depending on the ambient temperature. It's not as efficient as mercury but a whole lot safer.

Odd request; i need to know the length of the glass in this thermometer and also the length of the scale between -20c and 50c. can anyone help please?
